Tax Senior Manager, Core Tax Services - Corporate/ASC 740 Focus

About the role

The Core Tax Services Senior Manager advises clients on tax implications, evaluates alternative actions, identifies compliance methods, and acts as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. This role requires applying knowledge to recognize potential risks and changes in tax policy, making decisions on filings and preparing for interactions with federal/state agencies. Additionally, the Senior Manager participates in marketing, networking, and business development, maintains client relationships, and serves as a key point of contact for complex inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensures client compliance with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens
    • Conducts top-level review of tax returns and resolves issues with clients; consults with specialists as necessary
    • Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with client/partner as needed
    • Identifies and conducts research on complex issues; provides research methodology for efficient processes
    • Trains managers/staff on research skills and helps frame tax issues for analysis
  • Research
    • Identifies when research is needed; clearly frames issues for research; reports analysis
    • Identifies complex issues to be researched by engagement team and provides research methodology
    • Helps others learn and apply ASC 740 and Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM regarding them
    • Reviews tax provisions and explains income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to clients
  • Tax Consulting
    • Assists in developing and implementing methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing taxes
    • Applies tax knowledge and business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions
    • Monitors implementation of work plans and provides effective assistance with protests at the appeals level
    • Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies and implements applicable Firm strategies
    • Manages client expectations
  • Tax Specialization
    • Develops in-depth understanding of one or more areas of taxation, such as individual, corporate, property, sales, corporate, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits
    • Organizes and conducts effective external CPE training sessions in area of specialization, involving Firm specialists, at least once per year
    • Trains and mentors managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas
  • Strategy Development
    • Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, Firm, or Firm personnel positions, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits
    • Researches and implements tax strategies, including experimenting with promising new strategies and ideas
    • Makes suggestions for improving previous work products or approaches
    • Presents complex strategies to clients and prospective clients
  • Other duties as required
    • Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects
    • Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments
    • Trains associates and seniors on using current software tools
    • Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates
    • Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates

    Requirements

    Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required. Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred. Prior supervisory experience required. CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent of one of these designations) required. Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and tax research databases and compliance process software preferred. Superior verbal and written communication skills, strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, and decision-making abilities. Capable of working well in a team environment and developing and managing a team of tax professionals. Capable of composing written tax advice and developing and maintaining client relationships. Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients.

    Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred
    • Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred

    Illinois Range: $140,000 - $190,000
    Maryland Range: $150,000 - $180,000

    Minnesota Range: $130,000 - $190,000
    New Jersey Range: $155,000 - $200,000
    Ohio Range: $125,000 - $200,000
    NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $180,000 - $225,000
    Washington Range: $158,400 - $215,400
    Washington DC Range: $162,000 - $190,000
