About the role

The Core Tax Services Senior Manager advises clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluates and selects alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and identifies different methods of complying with tax regulations. As the primary client contact for complex tax issues, this role applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizes and communicates risks, and makes top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies.

A critical member of the office/region leadership team, the Senior Manager actively participates in marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise while maintaining client relationships and serving as the primary contact for complex questions.

Responsibilities

  • Tax Compliance:
    • Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens.
    • Ensures self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
    • Conducts top-level review of tax returns (T/R) and resolves all tax issues with clients; involves specialists where appropriate.
    • Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as needed.
  • Research:
    • Identifies when research is needed, frames issues clearly, and reports analysis concisely.
    • Identifies complex issues for the engagement team and provides research methodology.
    • Trains managers/staff on research skills and helps frame tax issues for analysis.
    • Involves firm specialists as appropriate.
  • ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals:
    • Applies Firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding FAS 109, FIN 48, and ASC 740.
    • Reviews tax provisions and workpapers, applying in-depth knowledge of ASC 740.
    • Explains and discusses components of the income tax provision, uncertain tax positions, and other complexities with clients.
  • Tax Consulting:
    • Develops, recommends, and implements methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing taxes.
    • Applies tax knowledge and industry expertise to recommend solutions while managing risk.
    • Confers with STS specialists to determine applicability of consulting specialties to clients.
    • Monitors implementation of work plans for tax consulting projects.
    • Manages inquiries from federal/state agencies with little or no assistance and assists with protests at the appeals level.
    • Implements Firm strategies and manages client expectations.
  • Tax Specialization:
    • Develops in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more tax areas (e.g., corporate, international, state/local, credits/incentives, R&D).
    • May organize or participate in external CPE training sessions in area of specialization at least once per year.
    • Trains and mentors managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas.
  • Strategy Development:
    • Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the Firm, or personnel (e.g., reducing taxes/expenses or providing non-tax benefits).
    • Researches and implements tax strategies, including experimentation with promising new approaches.
    • Consistently suggests improvements to previous work products or approaches.
    • May lead marketing campaigns and present complex strategies to clients/prospective clients.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:
    • Supervises, reviews, and provides feedback on work prepared by associates and senior associates.
    • Trains associates/seniors on current software tools and acts as a Career Advisor.
    • Schedules and manages workloads and provides verbal/written performance feedback.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
  • Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
  • Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
  • Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience required.

Qualifications

  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) required.
  • Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
  • Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to effectively delegate work and develop/manage a team of tax professionals.
  • Capacity to work well in a team environment and develop/maintain client relationships.
  • Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for issue resolution.

Pay

Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. Ranges by location:

  • California: $146,000 - $200,000
  • Colorado: $165,000 - $180,000
  • Illinois: $140,000 - $190,000
  • Maryland: $150,000 - $180,000
  • Massachusetts: $150,000 - $206,000
  • Minnesota: $130,000 - $190,000
  • New Jersey: $155,000 - $200,000
  • Ohio: $125,000 - $200,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $180,000 - $225,000
  • Washington: $158,400 - $215,400
  • Washington DC: $162,000 - $190,000
