Tax Senior Manager, Core Tax Services - Corporate/ASC 740 Focus
About the Role
The Core Tax Services Senior Manager advises clients on tax implications of business decisions, evaluates and selects alternative actions to lessen tax burden, and identifies methods to comply with tax regulations. This role serves as the primary client contact for complex tax issues, applies tax knowledge to recognize risks, and makes top-level decisions regarding filings and resolutions. The Senior Manager also participates in leadership, marketing, networking, and business development while maintaining client relationships.
Responsibilities
- Ensures clients and service teams comply with tax authorities and firm policies (e.g., BDO Tax Quality Manual) while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
- Conducts top-level reviews of tax returns, resolves issues, and involves specialists as needed.
- Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with clients or partners.
- Identifies when research is needed, frames issues clearly, and reports analysis concisely.
- Trains managers and staff on research skills and frames tax issues for analysis.
- Applies ASC 740 (FAS 109/FIN 48) and firm policies to tax accruals, reviews tax provisions, and explains components to clients.
- Develops and implements tax strategies to maximize client benefits, including reducing current and future taxes.
- Consults with specialists to determine applicability of tax consulting services and monitors implementation of work plans.
- Manages inquiries from federal/state agencies, assists with protests at the appeals level, and implements firm strategies.
- Develops expertise in one or more tax specializations (e.g., corporate, international, state/local, R&D credits).
- Conducts external CPE training sessions in areas of specialization at least annually.
- Researches and implements tax strategies to reduce taxes/expenses or provide non-tax benefits.
- Supervises, reviews, and provides feedback to associates and senior associates.
- Trains staff on software tools, manages workloads, and acts as a career advisor.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Eight (8) or more years of relevant tax experience in public accounting, private industry, or consulting.
- Industry expertise in a tax specialty preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
Skills
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to U.S. jurisdiction), or Enrolled Agent (EA) required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and tax research databases preferred.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical, research, and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to delegate, work in teams, and develop tax professionals.
- Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact.
Pay
Salary ranges by location:
- California: $146,000 – $200,000
- Colorado: $165,000 – $180,000
- Illinois: $140,000 – $190,000
- Maryland: $150,000 – $180,000
- Massachusetts: $150,000 – $206,000
- Minnesota: $130,000 – $190,000
- New Jersey: $155,000 – $200,000
- Ohio: $125,000 – $200,000
- NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $180,000 – $225,000
- Washington: $158,400 – $215,400
- Washington DC: $162,000 – $190,000
Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.
