Tax Senior Manager, Core Tax Services
About the role
The Core Tax Services Senior Manager advises clients on tax implications, evaluates alternative actions to reduce tax burden, identifies compliance methods, and acts as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. This role involves applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizing and communicating risks, and making decisions regarding filings and question resolution. Additionally, the Senior Manager participates in marketing, networking, and business development, maintains client relationships, and handles inquiries from federal and state agencies.
Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance
- Ensures client compliance with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens
- Conducts top-level review of T/R and resolves all tax issues with clients
- Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with client and/or partner as appropriate
- Identifies and conducts necessary research to resolve complex issues
- Trains managers/staff on research skills and helps frame tax issues for analysis
- Involves firm specialists, as appropriate
- Research
- Identifies when research is needed and clearly reports the analysis
- Identifies complex issues to be researched and provides research methodology
- Trains others on research skills
- Tax Accruals
- Applies Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48
- Applies ASC 740 and Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM regarding it
- Helps others learn and apply ASC 740 and Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM regarding it
- Reviews tax provisions and explains and discusses components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions
- Tax Consulting
- Develops and recommends efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing taxes
- Applies tax knowledge and business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions
- Monitors implementation of work plans for tax consulting projects
- Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies
- Provides effective assistance with protests at the appeals level
- Implements applicable Firm strategies
- Manages client expectations
- Tax Specialization
- Develops in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities regarding one or more areas of taxation
- Organizes and conducts effective external CPE training sessions in area of specialization, involving Firm specialists, at least once per year
- Trains and mentors managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas
- Strategy Development
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, Firm, or Firm personnel positions
- Researches and implements tax strategies, including experimenting with promising new strategies and ideas
- Makes suggestions for improving previous work products or approaches
- Presents complex strategies to clients and prospective clients
- Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects
- Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments
- Trains associates and seniors on using current software tools
- Manages workload of associates and senior associates
- Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred
- Master's in Accountancy or Taxation preferred
- Experience in tax compliance, research, tax accruals, tax consulting, tax specialization, strategy development, and supervisory responsibilities
- Knowledge of ASC 740, FAS 109, and FIN 48
- Strong analytical, research, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work well in a team environment and manage client relationships
- Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for complex issues

Requirements
Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required. Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred. Prior supervisory experience required. CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent of one of these designations) required. Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred. Software proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
