Tax Managing Director, Core Tax Services - Corporate/ASC 740 Focus
About the Role
The Tax Managing Director applies industry-specific knowledge to advise clients on tax implications of their business objectives, evaluates and selects alternative actions to lessen tax burden and compliance costs, and identifies methods to comply with tax regulations. This role serves as the primary client contact for complex tax issues, makes top-level decisions on filings and resolutions, and participates in leadership as a key member of the office or region. The Tax Managing Director also supervises teams, engages in business development, and maintains client relationships.
Responsibilities
- Ensures clients and teams comply with all applicable tax authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, adhering to Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
- Manages engagements to meet performance metrics and practices hands-on client service delivery.
- Identifies when tax research is needed, frames issues clearly, and reports analysis concisely; provides research methodology for complex issues.
- Serves as a technical reviewer for work papers in an area of expertise, including ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) tax accruals.
- Applies technical expertise to income tax provisions, including international tax, valuation allowance credits, business combinations, and stock-based compensation.
- Develops, recommends, and implements tax-efficient methods to maximize client benefits and decrease current and future tax liabilities.
- Applies expert knowledge of tax specialties (e.g., International, SALT, Estate Planning) for issue identification and resolution.
- Develops in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more tax specialties (e.g., corporate, pass-through, state and local, international, transfer pricing).
- Advises clients on tax implications, recommends alternative courses of action, and identifies compliance methods.
- Introduces and develops new or improved tax strategies to reduce taxes, expenses, or provide non-tax benefits for clients, the Firm, or personnel.
- Supervises associates, senior associates, and managers, including reviewing work, providing feedback, and managing workloads.
- Acts as a Career Advisor and provides verbal and written performance feedback to team members.
- Participates in marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Ten (10) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) required.
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.

Pay
Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. The following ranges apply by location:
- California: $190,000 - $335,000
- Colorado: $185,000 - $225,000
- Illinois: $175,000 - $250,000
- Maryland: $185,000 - $260,000
- Massachusetts: $215,000 - $300,000
- Minnesota: $170,000 - $250,000
- New Jersey: $190,000 - $350,000
- Ohio: $150,000 - $300,000
- NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $230,000 - $350,000
- Washington: $196,400 - $249,400
- Washington DC: $190,000 - $300,000
