About the role

The Tax Manager, Core Tax Services is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, you will apply knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognize and communicate potential risks, and identify changes in tax policy. You will also be involved in marketing, networking, and business development within your area of expertise and may provide written tax advice to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures clients comply with all applicable tax authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and ensures compliance with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
  • Conducts top-level review of tax returns and resolves all tax issues with clients; involves specialists where appropriate.
  • Communicates with clients and Assurance teams regarding any issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
  • Plans and reviews the tax process, including:
    • Budgeting and staffing.
    • Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance from Senior staff.
    • Timely billing, including management of out-of-scope activity and communication to the client.
    • Timely collection of accounts receivable.
  • Manages client relationships and expectations in accordance with the project.
  • Provides advice to clients in a timely manner.
  • Identifies when research is needed, frames issues clearly, and reports analysis concisely.
  • Applies Firm and professional standards for preparation of written tax advice (WTA) and tax returns.
  • Involves Firm specialists as appropriate.
  • Correctly and proactively applies Firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48).
  • Explains and discusses components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions with clients.
  • Communicates with Assurance counterparts to plan tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope, and delivery dates.
  • Assists with developing and recommending methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients’ current and future taxes.
  • Considers the applicability of consulting specialties for each client.
  • Develops and implements work plans for ongoing projects.
  • Serves as a technical resource and ensures compliance with Firm policy regarding written tax advice.
  • Provides effective assistance with exam support and frames projects for delegation to seniors and associates.
  • Develops an in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more areas of taxation (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits).
  • May organize and conduct internal CPE training sessions in area of specialization.
  • Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel (e.g., reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits).
  • Reviews studies of tax implications and offers clients alternative courses of action.
  • Identifies and leverages lessons learned on prior projects to improve processes and methods.
  • Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects, reviews their work, and provides feedback.
  • Trains associates and seniors on current software tools and acts as a Career Advisor.
  • Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates.
  • Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
  • Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
  • Five (5) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience required.
  • Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.

Qualifications

  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) required.
  • Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
  • Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

Pay

Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. The following ranges apply by location:

  • California: $112,000 - $150,000
  • Colorado: $104,500 - $115,500
  • Illinois: $105,000 - $130,000
  • Maryland: $113,000 - $120,000
  • Massachusetts: $120,000 - $127,000
  • Minnesota: $90,000 - $120,000
  • New Jersey: $115,000 - $140,000
  • Ohio: $105,000 - $150,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $125,000 - $150,000
  • Washington: $107,400 - $126,900
  • Washington DC: $120,000 - $140,000
