About the role

The Tax Manager, Core Tax Services is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. The Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues and recognizes and communicates potential risks and potential changes in the tax policy. The Manager is also involved in marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise and specialization and may be asked to provide written tax advice to clients.

Job duties

  • Tax Compliance: Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; ensures self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM); conducts top level review of T/R and resolves all tax issues with client; communicates with client and Assurance on issues identified in tax accrual reviews; plans and reviews tax process and procedures including budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement process and actual time vs. budget, timely billing including management of out-of-scope activity, and timely collection of A/R; manages client relationships and expectations
  • Research: Identifies when research is needed, frames issues clearly and concisely, reports analysis; applies Firm and professional standards for WTA and tax returns; involves firm specialists as appropriate
  • ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals: Applies Firm policies and TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48; explains and discusses components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to clients; communicates with Assurance counterparts to plan tax accrual reviews including budget, scope and delivery dates; utilizes and manages STS as needed
  • Tax Consulting: Assists with developing and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits by decreasing current and future taxes; considers applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties; develops work plans including STS assistance; serves as technical resource; ensures compliance with WTA policy; provides exam support; frames projects for delegation to seniors and associates
  • Tax Specialization: Develops in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more tax areas (individual, corporate, property, sales, pass-through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits); may organize and conduct internal CPE training sessions
  • Strategy Development: Introduces and develops new ideas to improve client or Firm position; reviews tax implications studies and offers alternative courses of action; identifies and leverages lessons learned and offers input on process improvements
  • Other duties as required

Supervisory responsibilities

  • Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects
  • Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments
  • Trains associates and seniors on current software tools
  • Acts as Career Advisor to associates and senior associates
  • Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates
  • Provides verbal and written performance feedback

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics. Master's in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.

Experience: Five or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required. Prior supervisory experience required. Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.

License/Certifications: CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) required. Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.

Software: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite preferred. Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

Pay

  • California Range: $112,000 - $150,000
  • Colorado Range: $104,500 - $115,500
  • Illinois Range: $105,000 - $130,000
  • Maryland Range: $113,000 - $120,000
  • Massachusetts Range: $120,000 - $127,000
  • Minnesota Range: $90,000 - $120,000
  • New Jersey Range: $115,000 - $140,000
  • Ohio Range: $105,000 - $150,000
  • NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $125,000 - $150,000
  • Washington Range: $107,400 - $126,900
  • Washington DC Range: $120,000 - $140,000
