Tax Experienced Manager, Core Tax Services - Corporate/ASC 740 Focus
About the Role
The Tax Experienced Manager, Core Tax Services is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues.
In this role, you will apply knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognize and communicate risks, and make top-level decisions regarding tax filings, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. You will also be a key member of the office/region leadership team, participating in marketing, networking, and business development while maintaining client relationships.
Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance:
- Ensures clients comply with all applicable tax authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens.
- Ensures compliance with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM).
- Conducts top-level reviews of tax returns (T/R) and resolves all tax issues with clients; involves specialists where appropriate.
- Communicates with clients and Assurance teams regarding issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
- Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with clients/partners as needed.
- Manages client relationships and expectations in accordance with project goals.
- Provides timely advice to clients.
- Plans and reviews the tax process, including:
- Budgeting and staffing.
- Monitoring engagement progress and actual time incurred vs. budget.
- Timely billing, including management of out-of-scope activity and communication to clients.
- Timely collection of accounts receivable (A/R).
- Research:
- Identifies when research is needed, frames issues clearly, and reports analysis concisely.
- Identifies complex issues for the engagement team and provides research methodology.
- Trains managers/staff on research skills and framing tax issues for analysis.
- Involves firm specialists as appropriate.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals:
- Applies Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
- Applies ASC 740 and Firm policies proactively and correctly.
- Helps others learn and apply ASC 740 and related Firm policies.
- Reviews tax provisions using in-depth knowledge of ASC 740.
- May review prepared workpapers.
- Explains and discusses components of the income tax provision, uncertain tax positions, and other complexities with clients.
- Tax Consulting:
- Develops, recommends, and implements methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients’ current and future taxes.
- Applies tax knowledge and industry expertise to recommend solutions.
- Maximizes client benefits while managing risk.
- Consults with STS specialists to determine applicability of consulting specialties.
- Monitors implementation of work plans for tax consulting projects.
- Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with minimal assistance.
- May assist with protests at the appeals level.
- Implements applicable Firm strategies and manages client expectations.
- Tax Specialization:
- Develops in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in one or more tax areas (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, pass-through, state/local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits/incentives, compensation/benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits).
- May organize, conduct, or participate in external CPE training sessions in area of specialization at least once per year.
- Trains and mentors managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas.
- Strategy Development:
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the Firm, or personnel (e.g., reducing taxes/expenses or providing non-tax benefits).
- Researches and implements tax strategies, including experimentation with new approaches.
- Consistently suggests improvements to previous work products or approaches.
- May present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
- Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.
- Reviews work prepared by associates/senior associates and provides feedback.
- Trains associates/seniors on current software tools.
- May act as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates.
- Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.
- Performs other duties as required.
Requirements
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
- Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
- Experience:
- Six (6) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
- License/Certifications:
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) required.
- Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
- Software:
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

Pay
Individual salaries are determined based on qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. The following ranges apply by location:
- California: $136,000 - $165,000
- Colorado: $115,000 - $165,000
- Illinois: $120,000 - $139,000
- Maryland: $121,000 - $145,000
- Massachusetts: $130,000 - $147,750
- Minnesota: $100,000 - $130,000
- New Jersey: $130,000 - $165,000
- Ohio: $110,000 - $170,000
- NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $150,000 - $180,000
- Washington: $131,400 - $160,000
- Washington DC: $140,000 - $162,000
