Orientation Overview
This orientation will provide the apprentice with a full overview of the expectations of the apprentice program including the on-the-job training component and related instruction, recordkeeping requirements and communication.
Instruction Schedule
- Apprentices will meet with the Apprentice Training Director for 9 weeks of instruction each semester.
Period 1 Instruction
- An introduction to wastewater systems
- Rules and regulations
- Operator ethics and safety related topics
Confined Space Training
- Introduction to confined spaces and proper steps to protect operators working in such conditions
- Hazards encountered in confined spaces
- Importance and order of atmospheric testing
- Ventilation requirements
- Duties of each member of the confined space entry team
- Required safety equipment for confined space
First Aid
- Treatment of burns, wounds, head, neck and back injuries, and heat and cold related emergencies
- Management of sudden illnesses, stroke, seizure, bites and poisoning
CPR Training
- How to perform CPR and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults
- Role of AEDs in emergency cardiac care
Safety Course
- Introduction to safety concepts and programs
Elective Credits
- Attendance at conferences, expos, general and advanced training courses offered to general membership, and outside training events (with approval from Apprentice Coordinator)
