About the role

Milwaukee County seeks a Systems Analyst III contractor focused on Hardware-Centric IT Asset Management to ensure complete, accurate, and continuously validated inventory of all physical technology assets across County facilities. This role is foundational to building a mature, automated IT Asset Management program by conducting field verification, device tracking, lifecycle management, and CMDB accuracy to reduce operational risk, improve troubleshooting, and support cost-optimized decisions. The contractor will work closely with Service Operations, Business Analysts, Security, and Infrastructure teams to maintain disciplined stewardship of desktops, laptops, tablets, printers, POS equipment, networking devices, and specialized hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct physical walkthroughs across County offices and remote sites to locate, inspect, and validate IT hardware; confirm asset tags, serial numbers, physical condition, model, and configurations.
  • Reconcile differences between physical hardware and CMDB records; correct inaccuracies, update missing relationships, and identify orphaned, misplaced, or untagged devices.
  • Execute periodic inventory reconciliation using network discovery, cloud management, and endpoint tools; identify systemic flaws in automated discovery or manual workflows and propose fixes.
  • Maintain real-time accuracy of device locations (desk, room, building, zone) and document equipment movement during relocations, renovations, or lifecycle refreshes.
  • Support full hardware lifecycle: receiving, tagging, imaging assistance, deployment prep, and retirement; verify new hardware against POs, specs, and standards.
  • Capture warranty status, purchase dates, age, and condition in asset systems to support refresh and budgeting; coordinate secure transport for repair, return, or disposal.
  • Ensure CMDB reflects correct associations between hardware and assigned users, business units, network segments, installed software, tickets, incidents, and changes.
  • Validate physical asset roles (workstation, kiosk, POS, mobile, peripheral) and ensure correct representation in CMDB.
  • Build communication channels with County departments to understand hardware usage, deployment, operational support, and planned changes; identify impacts of outdated or insufficient hardware.
  • Assist procurement by verifying device requests for compatibility with County standards; validate specs against approved configurations before purchase or deployment.
  • Maintain datasets on device age, support eligibility, warranty, and end-of-life; assist in refresh prioritization and flag high-risk devices (aging POS, unsupported models, damaged equipment).
  • Coordinate secure collection and disposal of retired devices; ensure chain-of-custody, data wiping, destruction, and vendor compliance; assist in recovering residual value from salvageable equipment.
  • Support creation and documentation of hardware standards for end-user devices and peripherals; contribute to troubleshooting and governance discussions on selection, approval, and lifecycle processes.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in IT Asset Management, including Hardware Discovery, Validation & Reconciliation.
  • 5+ years of experience in CMDB data accuracy and Asset Associations.
  • 5+ years of experience in IT Asset Management Process Development and documentation.
  • Must be a current Wisconsin resident; no relocation allowed.
  • Must pass Milwaukee County Standard Background Check.
  • Onsite work required at multiple County locations.
