Supervision of Training
A System Relay Services Union advisor and a Company advisor will oversee training. The Company advisor maintains records of Trainee progress including department-related job instructions, hands-on instruction, daily assignment hours, and bi-monthly evaluation reports. Evaluation meetings are conducted during and after each training section with the Trainee, advisors, and department superintendent or designee. Absences due to sick leave, jury duty, or personal business are included in the term of training unless extended absences prevent scheduled progress; extensions require evidence of extended personal illness or unusual hardship.
Conditions of Training
- Trainees must complete a polyphase course with a grade of C or higher unless an approved equivalent has been completed.
- Trainees are not eligible for overtime assignments that interfere with department-related job instructions or hands-on instruction.
- Trainees must obey all safety rules and regulations.
- Department-related job and hands-on instruction schedules will be posted prior to vacation selections each year; Trainees must select vacations to avoid conflicts.
Completion of Training
During training, Trainees must demonstrate a professional and conscientious attitude characterized by safety awareness, good attendance, willingness to learn, ability to get along with others, and interest in advancement of the craft. Quizzes and tests may be administered and graded; these documents become part of the Trainee’s permanent record but are not used to calculate the Trainee’s grade.
- At the end of each section, an exam will be administered; a grade of 80% or higher must be attained or the Trainee will be disqualified.
- The construction section includes two exams: one at approximately 8–12 weeks and one at the end; Trainees will be given one opportunity to pass each test.
- If a Trainee fails the final section exam with a score of 70% or better, one opportunity to retest the final section exam will be provided.
- If disqualified, a Trainee may re-enter and repeat the program one time after one year, if a vacancy exists.
Upon satisfactory completion, each Trainee will be classified as a System Tester and receive a Certificate of Completion.
