System Operations Technical Trainer or Senior System Operations Technical Trainer
This position will be hired at either the System Operations Tech Trainer Level or Senior Operations Tech Level based on experience and credentials.
About the role
This position is responsible for providing knowledge and competency-based training to operating personnel expected to perform the system operations control center functions required by Duke Energy. Responsibilities include developing new and experienced system operators using the training methodologies identified in the entity's System Operator Training Program Manual and in accordance with industry guidelines. The role involves analyzing, designing, and developing training materials to prepare system operators to reliably operate the bulk electric system, as well as evaluating learning through assessment tools and performance demonstration using simulation technology.
Persons hired into this position will be mentored by experienced System Operations trainers and provided train-the-trainer opportunities. They will be expected to develop the required competencies necessary to be successful in the role of a System Operations Technical Trainer fairly quickly. If performance does not meet expectations, the individual may be removed from the position after approximately one year of training development or at any time deemed appropriate by leadership.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the training and development of new Bulk Electric System Operators using the ADDIE Systematic Approach to Training, in accordance with NERC PER Training Standards and Duke Energy's System Operator Qualification Program requirements.
- Oversee the performance development of NERC Certified Bulk Electric System Operators using the ADDIE Systematic Approach to Training, in compliance with NERC PER Training Standards, NERC System Operator Certification Program, NERC Continuing Education Program, and other regional and company-specific requirements. This includes writing NERC CE Approved Individual Learning Activity applications and executing training in compliance with applicable FERC Orders, including FERC Standards of Conduct.
- Collaborate with the Director and trainers within the SysOps training organization to stay current on emerging training practices, trends, and methods, and discover innovative approaches to training system operators on relevant NERC Reliability Standard requirements.
- Provide an optimal learning experience to operators, ensuring they receive the necessary tools and content to perform real-time actions in normal, abnormal, and emergency conditions on the Bulk Electric System.
- Communicate emerging training tools and methods that could enhance the program to the Training Director for consideration.
- Interface with file and data management tools to accurately document a System Operator's initial training and track NERC Certified System Operators' continuing education training hours in accordance with NERC guidelines.
- Develop training for operationally-specific simulation scenarios, operate the training simulator, and develop content or collaborate with an e-learning SME to create web-based training content.
- Handle unexpected training challenges (e.g., technology malfunctions) without compromising the quality of the learning experience and keep the Training Director informed of such activities.
- Engage with ECC General Managers and Managers in planning training activities and keep them informed of relevant training matters affecting their groups.
- Provide positive and professional interactions across the PGO Organization, demonstrating an "actively caring" attitude that reflects Duke Energy's commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace.
Requirements
System Ops Tech Trainer
- Technical degree and two (2) years of related work experience.
- In lieu of a technical degree: High School/GED and four (4) years of related work experience.
Senior System Ops Tech Trainer
- Technical degree and four (4) years of related work experience.
- In lieu of a technical degree: High School/GED and six (6) years of related work experience.
- NERC Certified Operator.
Qualifications
- In addition to the required degree, two years of related work experience where a commitment to training was demonstrated in a support role (desired).
- Excellent people skills, with demonstrated credibility working effectively with operators and leadership from diverse socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Excellent communication skills, with consistency in planning, coordinating, and implementing training plans for upcoming training cycles.
- Accountable to the Training Manager and team; dependable and demonstrates a team-player attitude. Actively participates in staff calls and meetings and can lead training meetings in the absence of the Training Manager.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated excellence in job performance at previous levels.
- External to the organization, individuals in this role may have positioned themselves as leaders in training by effectively presenting or facilitating sessions at operator conferences and workshops, through self-directed personal development, and through knowledge and skills associated with the operation of the Dispatch Training Simulator.
- Demonstrated competencies in presentation skills, conflict management, and proficiency in Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Duke Energy's culture of compliance.
- Experience in course development.
Working Conditions
- Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility.
- Work schedule typically follows a daytime schedule aligned with the region's training schedule, subject to potential annual changes.
- May include periodic support in the control room and occasional travel to operator conferences and training workshops.
