Position Summary
Develops, organizes, and implements high quality instructional training/coaching to program participants in the Swim Team program.
Essential Functions
- Hires, trains, and supervises swim team coaches.
- Makes sure swim team coaches are ready and have the necessary certifications.
- Holds regular planning meetings with coaches to ensure consistent programming.
- Evaluates swim team coaches to ensure professionalism and correct coaching methods are being used.
- Schedules meets for all levels of competition.
- Develops, implements, and monitors annual budgets for the swim team program.
- Agree and enforce scheduled practice times.
- Develops a written training and instructional plan for each swimmer.
- Keeps accurate records on each swimmer evaluating him/her at the beginning and end of the session.
- Communicates effectively to both children and their guardians regarding the swimmer’s progress and behaviors.
- Maintains a professional attitude and appearance.
- Must be able to meet the physical and emotional demands of the job including being able to get into the water for training and instruction.
- Maintains a clean and safe environment. Removes any hazardous obstacles and reports unsafe conditions or equipment to your supervisor.
- Provides an emotionally secure environment for participants.
- Has the aptitude and attitude for coaching all ages and levels of swimming ability.
- Gives excellent coaching instructions.
- Promotes aquatics and other YMCA programs.
- Communicates to direct supervisor any concerns, needed repairs, or incidents that may need follow-up.
- Communicates any suggestions to improve the aquatics facility.
- Assists in YMCA Branch Director on Duty responsibilities and rotation.
Qualifications
- A 2-year college degree or applicable experience is required; Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent strongly preferred.
- Certification requirements include CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and must hold current YMCA Lifeguard certification (or hold a valid American Safety and Health (ASHI) Lifeguard certification and attend YMCA Crossover with 90 days of employment).
- Two years or more of coaching related experience preferred.
- Previous competitive swimming experience with knowledge of competitive stroke, starts and turns required.
- One year minimum of supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license, insurable drivers record according to the YMCA’s insurance carriers, and have reliable transportation to travel for business meetings, training events, YMCA site visits, vendors and suppliers, etc.
- Computer skills needed, particularly with Microsoft Office and email applications, along with ability to learn the internal YMCA software.
