About the role

The position oversees the daily operations of 13 waste and recycling convenience centers, ensuring safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible handling of solid waste and recyclable materials.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules, trains, participates in hiring, and supervises staff
  • Assists customers, promotes recycling and waste diversion efforts
  • Maintains regulatory compliance
  • Supports Wilson County's environmental stewardship objectives
  • Coordinates site maintenance tasks such as building upkeep, fence maintenance, and groundskeeping
  • Performs site inspections and coordinates maintenance and repairs
  • Oversees recycling collection, processing, and storage activities
  • Trains staff on proper recycling practices and contamination prevention
  • Inspects recyclable materials for contamination and takes corrective action
  • Coordinates the collection and shipment of recyclable commodities
  • Maintains records and tracks recycling volumes and performance metrics
  • Promotes waste reduction, reuse, and recycling initiatives
  • Develops and implements public education and outreach programs related to recycling services

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Considerable related experience including some mechanical and supervisory experience
  • Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina
  • Valid Class A or B CDL (preferred)
  • Landfill Operations Specialist certification within six months of employment
  • SWANA Recycling Coordinator Certification (preferred)
  • Intermediate computer skills in Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint

  • Working knowledge of solid waste management laws and regulations
  • Ability to make non-routine, interpretative administrative decisions
  • Ability to develop and modify work procedures, methods, and processes
  • Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate the work of staff
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy, and firmness in frequent contact with the public
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County staff and the general public
  • Intermediate computer skills in Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
