Duties & Responsibilities
- Aid in field survey work for municipal, transportation, utility, construction, platting, and civil engineering projects.
- Support construction staking for streets, utilities, site improvements, and other project features under the direction of senior survey staff.
- Collect survey data using GPS, total stations, levels, and other survey equipment.
- Assist with organizing, formatting, and transferring survey data for use by engineers, designers, technicians, and project managers.
- Help prepare and maintain field notes, staking records, survey files, and related project documentation.
- Follow established survey procedures, workflows, and direction from senior survey staff.
- Aid in setting up, operating, caring for, and maintaining survey equipment and field supplies.
- Communicate field conditions, project questions, and data needs to senior survey staff and project teams.
- Support basic review of field data, measurements, and staking information for completeness and accuracy.
- Follow safe field practices when working near traffic, construction equipment, utilities, and active project sites.
- Aid in traffic control setup and awareness as needed to support safe survey operations.
- Show willingness to learn new tools, software, survey methods, and project types.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1-2 years of experience in surveying, construction staking, civil construction, engineering technology, or related field work.
- Interest in surveying, civil engineering, construction, mapping, or related technical field work.
- Ability and willingness to perform outdoor field work in varying weather conditions and project environments.
- Ability to follow technical direction, safety procedures, and established field workflows.
- Strong attention to detail, reliability, and willingness to learn.
- Comfortable using basic technology, tablets, computers, and Microsoft Office tools.
- Ability to communicate effectively with survey crews, project managers, engineers, and technical team members.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as needed.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Associate degree or technical degree in surveying, civil engineering technology, construction, GIS, CAD/drafting, or a related field.
- Internship, coursework, or hands-on exposure to surveying, construction staking, civil engineering, or field data collection.
- Familiarity with GPS equipment, total stations, Trimble systems, Leica, Carlson, or other survey equipment/software.
- Exposure to Civil 3D, OpenRoads Designer, GIS, or related mapping/design software.
- Experience working on construction sites, municipal projects, transportation projects, utilities, or other infrastructure-related field work.
- Interest in pursuing survey-related certifications or long-term growth in the surveying profession.
