About the role
The Certified Cardiovascular Surgical Technologist delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing various functions to support the efficient operation of the Cardiovascular surgical suite. Under the supervision of the Circulating RN, the Surgical Technologist prepares the surgical suite, positions and prepares the patient, and provides instruments, equipment, and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure. The Surgical Technologist ensures a sterile field, proper instrument counts, and proper operation of instruments and equipment. The Surgical Technologist participates in patient-specific care as directed and follows service excellence standards to promote optimum patient satisfaction.
Responsibilities
- Organizes the operating suite with instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for the day.
- Reviews daily cases to ensure adequate stocking.
- Ensures proper functioning of equipment/instruments prior to procedures.
- Creates and maintains an orderly sterile instrument table.
- Utilizes physician preference cards for efficient setup.
- Prepares for emergency and add on cases rapidly and effectively.
- Transports patients to and from surgical suite as needed.
- Aids in the transfer, positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for surgical procedures in accordance with hospital standards.
- Performs and/or assists in scrub/gown/glove process for self and team.
- Aids the surgeon during each procedure by passing requested/required equipment, instruments, medications, sponges, sutures, etc..
- Performs other duties as instructed, such as holding retractors and cutting sutures.
- Ants up to situations and functions with a proactive awareness to help the surgical team maintain attention on the operative field.
- Monsitors the patient and any equipment in use to identify issues requiring immediate action.
- Reports and/or responds calmly and efficiently.
- Aids in the maintenance and care of surgical specimens.
- Handles surgical specimens according to hospital policy.
- Operates specialty equipment per manufacturer’s recommendations and policy/procedures.
- Completes all sponge, sharp, and instrument counts and reports all discrepancies to the nurse or surgeon.
- Performs thorough, prompt room turnover between procedures, including cleaning, restocking of supplies, and setup/cleaning/removal of equipment and instrumentation as needed.
- Participates in patient and procedural verification.
- Responds to lifesaving situations, including fire and disaster situations.
- Responds promptly to on-call situations as scheduled.
- Helps maintain a safe, organized environment for personnel and patients.
- Demonstrates commitment to patient safety initiatives including patient falls and restraints.
- Maintains patient privacy and comfort.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information and records, and advocates for patient rights as needed.
- Applies the principles of asepsis to ensure the prevention of infection and maintain optimum patient care.
- Follows universal precautions as required by hospital and OSHA policies.
- Demonstrates effective communication skills when interacting with patients, family members, physicians, and co-workers.
- Utilizes appropriate chains of command to communicate pertinent information.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system.
- Uses system to report potential patient safety issues.
- Contributes to performance improvement initiatives and works toward meeting and exceeding core measures, patient safety, and service excellence goals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Practices and adheres to the “Code of Conduct” and “Mission and Value Statement.”
Qualifications
- Advanced Cardiac Life Spt must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
- Associate Degree, or Vocational School Graduate.
Skills
Knowledge of procedure-related anatomy and physiology.
