Surgical Technologist PRN

About the Role

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for providing patient care activities, related non-professional services necessary for patient care, and maintaining the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities

• Implement technical components of patient care under the supervision of a licensed nurse according to policy, procedure, and protocol.
• Demonstrate competency in all procedures within the scope of practice, including obtaining, interpreting, and communicating patient information.
• Participate in the nursing process in all aspects of patient care delivery and complete activities according to established policy and protocol.
• Communicate accurate and timely information to the Registered Nurse regarding patients in their care.
• Record pertinent information clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner.
• Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships with patients, significant others, and co-workers.
• Utilize appropriate intraoperative techniques, including setup of needed items for patient care and knowledge of surgical procedures.
• Gather supplies, x-rays, and instruments/equipment for cases.
• Handle instruments appropriately and maintain strict sterile technique.
• Circulate under the direction of a Registered Nurse by:
  • Appraising cleanliness of rooms and proper functioning of equipment.
  • Setting up needed equipment pertinent to patient care.
  • Assisting with anesthesia intraoperatively.
  • Prepping the surgical site carefully.
  • Assisting in proper patient positioning.
  • Preparing and labeling specimens correctly.
  • Accompanying patient and anesthesia staff to PACU.
• Organize a plan of care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, incorporating physician-prescribed treatments, nursing assessments, and diagnostic data.
• Implement, document, and evaluate the plan of care, reflecting management of identified problems and patient responses to treatment.
• Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate administration of medications and treatments according to policy.
• Re-evaluate and modify the plan of care as indicated.
• Accept responsibility for nursing activities related to patient care within the operating room.
• Demonstrate appropriate judgment and decision-making skills.
• Serve as a preceptor and orient new members of the surgical team.
• Act as the patient’s advocate in meeting physical and psychological needs.
• Demonstrate effective communication skills and intervene in stressful situations involving patients or team members.
• Create and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for surgery.

Requirements

• 1 to 2 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledgeable of principles of aseptic technique.
• Ability to correlate clinical data with patient's medical and nursing care.
• Ability to set priorities.
• Ability to provide clear, concise direction to others and promote efficiency.
• Strong communication skills with patients, families, and co-workers.

Pay

$28.00 - $37.00 per hour, depending on experience.
