Surgical Technician/LPN- Operating Room

Main Function

The Surgical Technician supports the nursing staff by performing assigned functions of patient care under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN). They assist in the Surgical Department at Arnot Health, adhering to the qualifications and performance standards set by the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of Standard Precautions and sterile technique.

  • Knows basic anatomy relevant to surgical procedures.

  • Provides age-appropriate care within the scope of duties and responsibilities.

  • Uses, maintains, and cares for surgical instrumentation and equipment.

  • Assembles and sets up operating rooms with supplies, instruments, appliances, and additional equipment.

  • Moves and positions patients for surgical procedures.

  • Prepares scrub table and mayo stand.

  • Assists in draping patients for surgery.

  • Functions as a surgical scrub assistant according to OR standards.

  • Maintains correct counts of sponges, needles, and instruments.

  • Anticipates and assists the surgeon during the surgical procedure.

  • Functions as a second circulator under RN supervision.

  • Assists in emergency situations under the guidance of the RN or physician.

  • Performs other areas of surgical services as needed.

  • Maintains surgical specimens to prevent loss or damage.

  • Aids in making beds, assisting with cast applications, and performing errands.

  • Processes supplies through cleaning, packaging, sterilizing, or storage procedures.

  • Operates sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaners, and other equipment for instrument processing.

  • Functions with awareness of risk management and safety issues, reporting concerns appropriately.

  • Maintains knowledge of emergency procedures and personal roles in fire safety, Code Blue, disaster, and hazard procedures.

  • Reports accurately between shifts and advises appropriate personnel regarding patient status.

  • Improves quality in daily work by following quality improvement principles.

  • Completes assignments efficiently and practices cost-effective use of supplies.

  • Communicates effectively and develops positive relationships with staff and other healthcare team members.

  • Maintains and increases professional standards by attending continuing education in-services.

  • Assists in staff development and revision of procedures.

  • Takes call after demonstrating job competence.

  • Attends all mandatory educational programs as required by the position.

  • Interacts with customers/patients in a friendly and caring manner, addressing their psychological and physical needs.

Education

Graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology, appropriate training program in the military services or Public Health commissioned corps, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with previous surgical experience, or employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year occurring within four years immediately prior to January 5, 2015. Credentials must be maintained annually.

Experience

Surgical technician experience as described above, graduate of an accredited program, or LPN with previous surgical experience.

Certification

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of hire date.

Physical Demands

Must be able to meet the demands of an active position, including reaching above head, extensive walking, stooping, standing, lifting up to 50 lbs., and moderate sitting. Requires physical dexterity with arms and fingers bilaterally. Hearing and eyesight must be within normal range.

Infection Control

Performs all aspects of Standard Precautions when engaging in patient care.

Exposure Category

Category I tasks involving exposure to blood and body fluids or tissue.
