About the role

Performs technical skills and provides assistance to surgeons, anesthesia personnel, registered nurses, and other professionals in the operating room. Performs similar duties in other areas of the hospital as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of techniques and procedures used by surgeons for various surgeries.
  • Able to assemble and troubleshoot equipment and instrumentation.
  • Ensures all necessary equipment and available instruments and supplies are in the room prior to the start of a case.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of asepsis and consistently maintains sterile techniques.
  • Monitors and calls attention to breaks in technique; communicates any breaks to circulating RN and surgeon.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization and disinfection, as evidenced by practice.
  • Updates preference cards as indicated and communicates changes/needs to inventory coordinator.
  • Handles all surgical specimens appropriately.
  • In conjunction with RN, conducts accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts according to departmental policies.
  • Accurately confirms and labels all medications on the sterile field; informs surgeon of medication to be dispensed prior to passing at the field.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the electronic system to retrieve and view pick tickets to pull surgical cases.
  • Practices within the scope of practice for a Surgical Technologist as outlined by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST).
  • For CFSA Certification: Demonstrates behaviors in the intraoperative phase to include using instruments/medical devices, providing exposure, handling and/or cutting tissue, providing hemostasis, and suturing under the direction of the surgeon.
  • For CFSA Certification: Demonstrates an understanding of techniques used by various surgeons to facilitate a safe surgical procedure in the assist role.
  • Attends all mandatory education programs and describes responsibilities related to general safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Participates in and completes required department-specific education and training programs.
  • Supports the mission, vision, and CARES values of Fisher-Titus.
  • Is knowledgeable of patient rights and ensures an atmosphere that allows for privacy, dignity, and well-being of all patients in a safe, secure environment.
  • Supports, cooperates with, and implements specific procedures and programs for safety, confidentiality, quality assurance, and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Communicates with compassion using active listening skills, the AIDET communication tool, key words at key times, and HEART service recovery techniques.
  • Demonstrates service etiquette, including greeting patients using the 10/5 rule, maintaining a calm and positive attitude, ensuring patient privacy, and adjusting approach to respect diversity.
  • Commits to safety by following established guidelines, recognizing risks, and reporting concerns.
  • Delivers high-quality care through efficient, effective, and purposeful work.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited LPN program.
  • Current CST certification.
  • BCLS Certification or within 12 months of hire.
  • LPN Licensure maintained.

Working Conditions

  • Stand/Walk: 6-8 hours
  • Sit: 1-2 hours
  • Bend, squat, climb, reach: up to 1/3 of the time
  • Lift, carry, push, pull: up to 1/3 of the time (up to 25 pounds)
  • Precise motor function (fine manipulation) for both hands
  • Gross motor function for both feet
  • Exposure to body fluids
