A Brief Overview

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates through clinical practice a clear understanding of sterile techniques and has a working knowledge of the specialized instrumentation and equipment required for a variety of specialty procedures.
  • Demonstrates competency to operate all specialty instruments, supplies, and equipment to at least one tertiary specialty service.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of an orderly surgical field and for consistently passing instruments and supplies quickly and efficiently to the surgeon.
  • Able to anticipate and prioritize the needs of the various steps associated with the procedure.
  • Takes part in sponge, needle and instruments counts as dictated by the procedure.
  • Responsible for maintaining the surgical specimen in a manner which identifies and preserves them for pathology evaluation.
  • Assists in ordering and stocking of specialty supplies under the direction of management staff and departmental guidelines.
  • In collaboration with a Registered Nurse, serves as a technical subject matter expert for at least one tertiary specialty.
  • Provides scrub services for major procedures in at least 2 surgical specialties (independently with high physician satisfaction).
  • Prepares and conducts technical performance-oriented training related to specialty service.
  • In collaboration with the clinical leadership, assists in workflow process improvement activities, contributes to organizational effectiveness, and demonstrates career growth and development.
  • Transports and delivers items, equipment, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs) throughout the facility.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • When directed by clinical specialist, inventories and orders specialty instruments, supplies unique to specialty.
  • Participates in the clinical orientation of SPD staff, serving as a role model and technical resource.
  • Dependable and reliable in performance of Surgical Tech I and II duties.
  • Performs all tasks in a manner that is cost effective.
  • Participates in departmental performance improvement activities.
  • Mets education and certification requirements.
  • Upholds Orlando Health philosophy and objectives.
  • Contributes to organizational effectiveness.
  • Demonstrates career growth and development.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of: Surgical Technology training program; or Orlando Health training program.
  • Four (4) year surgical tech experience. (CST and two (2) years of surgical tech experience may substitute for the required experience).
  • Maintains current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification.
