Job Summary

The Manager of Surgical Services oversees daily operations within designated units of the Surgical Services division. This may include an inpatient unit or one of the Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs). The specific area of specialization will be identified in the job posting.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Serves as an expert resource and role model for staff. Develops, updates, and evaluates clinical policies and procedures based on evidence-based guidelines.

  • Ensures care delivery aligns with standards through competency-based staff assessments at hire and on an ongoing basis. Leverages quality outcomes to ensure safe procedural care.

  • Promotes continuous education and professional development. Stays informed of best practices and communicates updates to staff.

  • Leads recruitment, interviews, and hiring of registered nurses. Conducts performance evaluations, provides coaching, and manages disciplinary actions when necessary.

  • Ensures staff are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver safe, high-quality patient care. Establishes and maintains staffing patterns. Coordinates and chairs staff and labor-management team meetings (UBT).

  • Fosters collaboration across departments to support the organization's mission, vision, and goals. Demonstrates critical thinking, effective conflict resolution, and transparent communication. Encourages innovation and problem-solving. Serves as a change agent.

  • Maintains a cooperative and efficient work environment through consistent application of contractual guidelines. Escalates issues appropriately. Cultivates relationships with providers and leaders, and mentors future leaders.

  • Participates in data collection and analysis. Communicates organizational and departmental performance improvement goals. Ensures compliance with regulatory and professional standards. Monitors safety and quality outcomes. Develops and communicates department quality plans aligned with evolving healthcare needs. Investigates and documents quality concerns and communicates findings appropriately.

  • Partners with business leadership to develop and manage budgets based on labor and supply cost projections. Oversees labor, inventory, and supply use in a cost-effective manner. Identifies and addresses budget variances. Prioritizes capital equipment needs and educates staff on budget goals, promoting fiscal responsibility.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum five years of RN clinical experience, with at least two years in Perioperative Services. Minimum two years of leadership experience in a healthcare setting.

  • Education: BSN or a bachelor's degree in a health-related field, or currently enrolled with a defined completion date.

  • Licensure/Certification: Active Registered Nurse license in Oregon. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within one month of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of Critical Care experience (e.g., MPU or SPA/PACU). Minimum four years of management experience in a similar role or acute care setting.

  • Minimum five years of demonstrated clinical knowledge in specialty area. Certification in a related specialty (e.g., CNOR, CPAN).

Non-Negotiable Requirements

  • Minimum five years of RN clinical experience with at least two years in Perioperative Services. Minimum two years of leadership experience in a healthcare setting.

  • Active RN license (Oregon). BLS certification within one month of hire.

  • BSN or related bachelor's degree (or enrolled with defined completion date).

Additional Information

  • Work Schedule: Monday to Friday with rotational weekend call.

  • Employee Status: Regular.
