About the role
A surgical coordinator, or surgery scheduler, maintains the schedule for a surgeon or department of surgeons in a medical facility. The role involves arranging the surgery schedule, ensuring patients complete necessary pre-surgery steps, and managing the administrative aspects of patient care.
Responsibilities
- Tracks and documents client medical information
- Schedules surgical procedures
- Confirms insurance
- Organizes the schedule for each surgeon
- Coordinates and schedules surgeries, follow-up appointments as designated by physicians
- Interacts with patients, physicians, and other staff both within the clinic and at outside facilities
- Routes all paperwork as required to meet physician and facility requirements
- Documents work processes as required
- Follows all written protocols and procedures of the clinic
- Demonstrates courtesy and helpfulness toward patients and their families
- Recognizes and responds appropriately to urgent/emergent situations per protocols
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with physicians, staff, and management
- Books surgeries based on physician volume, maintaining appropriate standard turn-around times
- Identifies scheduling barriers and implements solutions to improve scheduling results based on predetermined goals
- Follows established surgery center/hospital precautions and procedures to ensure a safe work environment
- Adheres to policies regarding safety, confidentiality, and HIPAA guidelines
Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
- 2 years of working experience in the medical field or customer service
- Healthcare experience a plus
- Knowledge of insurance requirements and medical terminology preferred
- Minimum 1-2 years scheduling experience
- Experience with ECW strongly preferred
- Bilingual (Spanish / English) is a plus but not a requirement
