Surgery RN - On-call Days

About the role

As an Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN), you will be responsible for the care of patients in the operating room. You will be accountable for ongoing evaluation, provision of care, and documentation of all components of care delivered within the perioperative environment using the nursing process. The RN coordinates care with the assigned team and communicates concerns to OR, preoperative, and postoperative staff to ensure patient safety.

Responsibilities

• Damp dust the assigned OR suite, including all equipment and flat surfaces, to prepare it for use.
• Organize and prepare for the care of assigned patients daily, gathering necessary equipment and supplies according to the surgeon’s preference cards.
• Ensure the surgical room is sterile and safe for the patient.
• Work alongside surgical technologists to maintain the sterile field in the operating room, ensuring it is not compromised during the procedure.
• Interview and assess patients in the preoperative area, verifying all pertinent documentation and ensuring appropriate site marking is completed with the surgeon.
• Communicate with the CRNA when ready to send for the patient, including confirming the patient’s name.
• Assist the anesthesia provider as needed for induction, throughout the procedure, and during emergence.
• Collaborate with the physician to develop the patient’s care plan during surgery.
• Ensure proper positioning of the patient and maintain patient safety during the procedure.
• Prep the patient’s surgical site according to surgeon preference and hospital policy.
• Adhere to Dunes Surgical Hospital policies and demonstrate fiscal responsibility.
• Maintain a clean and organized surgical room, ensuring instruments and sponges are organized for counting.
• Document patient care thoroughly and accurately, ensuring charges, implants, and tissue tracking information are complete and submitted in a timely manner.
• Maintain accurate counts according to hospital policy.
• Communicate with the OR board runner regarding patient care, schedule changes, or other issues in a timely and professional manner.
• Ensure verbal debriefing is completed at the end of the procedure before the surgeon leaves the OR suite, and that end-of-procedure documentation is accurate.
• Coordinate with the family care coordinator to provide updates during long procedures and bring family to the consult room post-debriefing.
• Coordinate with surgical aides to ensure recovery carts or postop beds are obtained and the patient is placed appropriately before leaving the operating room.
• Restock supplies, put away equipment, and terminally clean the room at the end of the shift or when a room closes.
• Assist with turnover, lifting, and breaks during downtimes between cases, and check in with the board runner for further assignments.
• Actively participate in assigned committees.
• Follow OSHA and other standards for protection against blood-borne pathogens.
• Maintain and care for equipment according to manufacturer instructions (IFUs).
• Inform management of day-to-day situations and file Midas Edge reports for incidents.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited college or university.
• Registered Professional Nurse with current state licensure.
• BLS Certification required.
• Must pass the AORN Perioperative 101 course during the Mentorship Program if no prior experience.
• OR experience preferred but not required.

Physical Demands

• Frequently lift patients, requiring the ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
• Exert at least 50 pounds of force to assist with patient transports.
• Stand, bend, stoop, and/or sit in confined areas for prolonged periods.
• Regularly required to talk and hear.
• Frequent repetitive motion of hands/wrists.
• Work in a clean, well-lighted area.
• May be exposed to unpleasant environmental situations resulting from patient care or activity.
