Aloha mai! Mahalo for your interest in Kamehameha Schools. We are seeking a Head Coach and two (2) Assistant Coaches to support our Surfing program for the 2026-2027 school year. These are seasonal positions with tentative season dates from February 2027 to May 2027.

About the role

Responsible for the coordination or assisting with the coordination of the Kamehameha Athletic Sports program. This includes coaching, instructing students, and performing other duties necessary to the development of players and teams, demonstrating skills and values in keeping with Kamehameha's philosophy of athletics.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of surfing, including all rules, regulations, skills, tactics, and techniques.
  • Translate sports knowledge to athletes and develop and evaluate athlete's and team's performance and progress.
  • Teach individual and team skills to athletes, focusing on observable outcomes beyond just winning and losing.
  • Assist athletes in reaching their full potential with patience and by addressing individual needs.
  • Organize and supervise well-planned, safe, and efficient practices and games, utilizing coaching staff effectively.
  • Prepare the team for competitions and conduct yourself in an ethical, professional manner as a positive role model.
  • Respect and motivate athletes, displaying encouraging conduct and maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Develop a team concept within a values-driven framework, promoting sportsmanship, respect for game rules, and respect for officials.
  • Provide a good balance between skill development and team concepts, ensuring each player feels part of the team.
  • Create an enjoyable environment and experience for athletes.
  • Handle administrative responsibilities, including resolving disciplinary issues, ensuring student-athlete medical and academic eligibility, and completing records and timesheets.
  • Act responsibly with equipment, uniforms, and budgeting, including inventorying equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, faculty, administrators, other coaches, and the community.
  • Promote the program in local and state communities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 1 year of coaching experience.
  • National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Fundamentals of Coaching Certification.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to relate effectively with students, coaches, staff, parents, teachers, and administrators.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities.
  • Previous coaching experience.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school or collegiate athletic participation.
  • High school or collegiate coaching experience.
  • Sensitivity to Hawaiian culture and Christian values.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical activity such as walking, standing, running, bending, crouching, reaching, lifting, and carrying.

Working Conditions

  • Work may involve traveling to various locations, including neighbor islands.
  • Work is conducted in an office/school environment and may require non-standard workplaces.
  • Typically conducted Monday through Friday, but evening and weekend hours are often required.

Pay

A stipend of $5,351 (Head Coach) or $3,746 (Assistant Coach) will be paid at the end of the Spring sports season.
