Surf Instructor

About the role

This seasonal, part-time Surf Instructor position runs from May to September 2027 at Dune Deck Beach Club in Westhampton Beach, New York. The role sits within the Outdoor Pursuits Department and reports to the Outdoor Pursuits Manager. The Surf Instructor delivers exceptional, personalized surf instruction and unforgettable experiences to club members while maintaining the highest standards of safety and guest care. Responsibilities include organizing and leading daily surf lessons and excursions in alignment with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), providing world-class instruction tailored to all skill levels, and contributing to the unique Discovery Land Company experience for members and team members alike.

Responsibilities

• Attend morning and evening briefings.
• Store all surf and activity equipment in the correct location.
• Engage with members daily to maintain enthusiasm, encourage activities, and prepare all necessary arrangements for lessons to provide world-class service and instruction.
• Facilitate and instruct members and staff in surfing and surf lessons.
• Ensure member and staff safety at all times.
• Refer any requests regarded as unsafe or any guests refusing to cooperate on safety issues to management.
• Ensure all related equipment is maintained in excellent working order; effect repairs as necessary.
• Coordinate orders to obtain necessary parts following standard purchase-order procedures and budget guidelines.
• Carry out and log all monthly safety checks on the system.
• Ensure correct presentation of Outdoor Pursuits department areas — clean, organized, and professional.
• Secure all equipment at the end of each day.
• Account for all equipment and confirm all members are safely ashore.
• Conduct guest counts as required.
• Assist in other Outdoor Pursuits services and perform any duties requested by the manager or supervisors.

Requirements

• Extensive surfing background.
• Previous experience in guest service or hospitality industry preferred.
• First Aid and CPR certified.
• Must be a strong swimmer.
• Good judgment and decision-making skills.
• Personable, approachable, creative, and adventurous.
• Dedicated to taking care of all member and guest needs.
• Positive attitude, professional demeanor, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to deliver service to members, guests, and team members.
• Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays; long hours may be required due to business demands.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to stay calm and focused during the busiest times.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; additional languages preferred.
• Ability to meet physical demands: working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions; standing, walking, and moving for periods greater than eight (8) hours; lifting and carrying items sometimes greater than fifty (50) pounds.

Pay

$22.00 – $26.00 USD per hour + Commission
