Supervisor, Transit Maintenance

About the Role

This position plans, trains, coordinates, and supervises skilled and unskilled workers in the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the City's Transit buses.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work: plans, organizes, schedules, supervises, assigns, reviews, and inspects operation, maintenance, repairs, and construction activities of transit fleet maintenance; ensures the allocation of sufficient personnel, equipment, and materials; supervises an extensive preventive maintenance program to ensure that proper procedures are being followed.
  • Supervises mechanics and auto service workers in transit fleet maintenance: plans, organizes, trains, and provides lead worker guidance; diagnoses problems in buses/equipment as they come in for repairs, creates work orders and assigns repair to employee; trains employees in new technology or operation of equipment; assists subordinates with difficult diagnoses and repairs; monitors work production; inspects the completion and quality of repairs; oversees and maintains safety procedures in the shop.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, parts, and supplies: orders operating supplies for shop thru central warehouse; orders materials and equipment needed for each job; makes daily check of shop equipment for safety purposes and to ensure proper working conditions, repairs as needed; distributes tools and equipment to employees; maintains current updates on diagnostic equipment; fabricates parts and special projects parts as needed.
  • Establishes and implements work methods and practices of the department: writes and amends safety rules and regulations; oversees the administering of the department's safety programs.
  • Assists in developing the department's budget; recommends Bid Specifications in the purchase of buses and equipment.
  • Prepares and processes necessary paperwork, specifications, and reports required by the FTA, LDEQ, City, and department policies and procedures; handles, prepares, and/or maintains the appropriate paperwork necessary to the functions of this position: handles invoices, estimates, Fleet Maintenance Records, and work orders; processes the pertinent records for each vehicle/equipment as required by department policies and procedures and for Federal, State and City requirements for audit; processes employee time sheets and evaluations.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and/or programs all electronic security systems, Twin Vision computer display signs, "Talking Bus" Notification Systems, and specialized wheelchair lifts on Transit buses and vans.
  • Operates or uses various equipment and tools to complete work assignments: operates diagnostic equipment and oversees and trains in the use of automotive repair tools and equipment; operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, and RTA Fleet Management software; oversees the P.M. Service for Vehicle Preventive Maintenance.
  • Conducts State of Louisiana Motor Vehicle Inspections.
  • Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies to complete work assignments: operates and maintains diagnostic instruments, drill press, welder, fork lift, hoist, hydraulic lifts, tire balancer, tire changer, chain sharpeners, bed knife and reel sharpeners, frame machine, Freon recover & exchange, brake lathe, hydraulic and air tools, battery tester, back lapper, etc.; operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data utilizing RTA Fleet Management, Comp Estimating MOD IS, and ISIS software.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED, with vocational or technical training in Automotive Technology.
  • Supplemented by five (5) years of progressively responsible supervisory experience in automotive and equipment repair.
  • Or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides for the technical, organizational, and supervisory knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

Licensing Requirements

  • Must possess a valid class B commercial driver's license.
  • Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class B commercial driver's license with air brakes at the time of appointment.
  • Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class B commercial driver's license with air brakes and passenger endorsement, and no manual transmission restrictions within three (3) months of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification.
