Job Location: Burlington, IA; La Crosse, WI; Galesburg, IL; and Savana, IL. Anticipated start date: October 1, 2026.

About the role

The BNSF Railway Engineering Department designs, constructs, and maintains the infrastructure of our extensive rail network. This role applies advanced engineering principles to address complex challenges, ensuring the safety and efficiency of our operations. Travel is required approximately 50%. Daily work is conducted in an indoor/outdoor safety-sensitive environment with diverse and extreme weather conditions, uneven surfaces, loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery. Relocation assistance may be offered based on business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Administer, supervise, and coordinate all maintenance, construction, inspection, and operation of bridges and structures, both operating and capital functions.
  • Day-to-day and long-range planning, budgeting, discipline, safety programs, and auditing.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure a safe and efficient maintenance operation.
  • Address technical training, safety training, follow up on safety issues, maintain contact with field personnel, and help enhance overall quality and safety guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, BNSF's Equal Employment Policy, applicable safety rules, scheduled agreements, FRA standards, and government regulations.

Requirements

  • Must obtain BNSF FRA Tier III Certification within 6 months of placement on this position.
  • Must be FLS Certified to be considered for this position.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Previous work experience in the engineering department.
  • Knowledge in the construction, inspection, and maintenance of bridges and their component parts.
  • Knowledge of structures construction standards, Maintenance of Way Standards, Maintenance of Way and Bridge Worker Safety Rules, and the General Code of Operating Rules.
  • Familiar with FRA and OSHA standards.
  • Working knowledge of union agreements and hours of service laws.
  • Self-directed, motivated, with good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of safe railroad operations and practices.
  • Ability to communicate well, one-on-one and in groups.
  • Safety-conscious and able to support and contribute to a strong safety process.
  • Good supervisory and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or other engineering-related field.
  • Obtained BNSF Tier III Certification from a Manager of Engineering Certification.
  • Previous work experience in structures engineering, or experience as supervisor structures, bridge inspector, or foreman.

Pay

Salary range: $101,700 - $111,870. The minimum of the posted pay range reflects the established entry rate for this position.
