About the role

Provides patient care consistent with applicable regulations and the Mission of Avera by monitoring and recommending optimal medication therapy, processing patient medication orders, and providing pharmaceutical information to staff and patients related to specific job assignments.

Under general supervision, guides and oversees pharmacy services for assigned areas in accordance with professional standards, regulatory and licensing agency policies, and federal and state laws related to the practice of pharmacy. Supervises and provides overall direction for the pharmacy staff to provide effective workflow and operation within assigned areas of responsibility to ensure optimal care delivery for patients and support for healthcare professionals and communities served by Avera.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately interprets, processes, and monitors medication orders issued by providers for contraindications, interactions, allergies, and appropriateness.
  • Prepares and dispenses medications for patients of all ages.
  • Provides medication information, counsels patients on the proper usage, desired effects and potential adverse effects of medication.
  • Performs inventory control measures during medication distribution and administration providing patients optimal medication resources in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, the Compliance Accountability Program, Code of Ethics as well as other policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies.
  • Performs and evaluates functions related to clinical activities such as pharmacokinetics, medication therapy monitoring, medication information and educational programs.
  • Maintains master and daily work schedules for designated areas.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary teams and committees to develop patient-centered services, designs and implements corresponding programs, and measure their effectiveness within the health system’s goals related to cost, quality, and patient outcomes.
  • Assists with the budget process as requested.
  • Coordinates staffing model that efficiently utilizes all resources to ensure maximum productivity and deliver high-quality, patient-centered pharmaceutical care.
  • Interviews, hires, develops, trains, and retains employees; plans, assigns, and leads work; appraises performance; rewards and coaches employees; addresses complaints and resolves problems.

Qualifications

  • The individual must be able to work the hours specified.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily including having visual acuity adequate to perform position duties and the ability to communicate effectively with others, hear, understand and distinguish speech and other sounds.
  • Required Education, License/Certification, Or Work Experience:
    • Pharmacist - Board of Pharmacy active in state of practice
    • Doctorate (PHD) of Pharmacy (PharmD)
    • 4-6 years Retail Pharmacy Practice experience
  • Preferred Education, License/Certification, Or Work Experience: Doctorate (PHD) of Pharmacy (PharmD)
