About the role
The Supervisor of Instruction – Social Studies/History supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the secondary Social Studies/History instructional program across grades 6–12. This individual works closely with school-based instructional leaders and teachers to execute the network's vision, goals, and priorities for Social Studies/History instruction.
Responsibilities
- Executes the vision for the network’s secondary Social Studies/History instructional program for grades 6 – 12 in service of the established goals and priorities for the Social Studies/History Department.
- Plans and leads network professional development for Social Studies/History teachers and instructional leaders.
- Ensures vertical alignment of Social Studies/History courses, with a special focus on college-preparatory coursework and college readiness.
- Plans and models coaching meetings based on the needs of teachers and leaders, including co-planning sessions, data meetings, and instructional observations.
- Regularly observes and/or co-observes Social Studies/History instruction and provides teachers and instructional leaders with timely written and in-person feedback and coaching, differentiating the frequency and intensity of support based on identified teacher, leader, school, and network needs.
- Models and/or co-teaches Social Studies/History lessons, as needed.
- Implements effective internal assessment systems to monitor academic progress, including the development and administration of three network mid-quarter assessments (September, November, and February) for each grade level and three March Madness Game Day Assessments for each grade level as part of TNReady test preparation.
- Implements effective data analysis processes for network mid-quarter assessments and supports instructional leaders and teachers in using assessment results to identify trends, misconceptions, instructional priorities, and appropriate reteach actions.
- Creates March Madness plans for grades 6, 7, and 8 as part of TNReady test preparation.
- Affords assistance to principals, deans of instruction, and instructional coaches in developing and strengthening Social Studies/History instructional programs that are consistent with network goals, priorities, and instructional expectations.
- Provides an ongoing quarterly status report on the health, progress, needs, and outcomes of the Social Studies/History instructional program to the Managing Director of Teaching and Learning.
Requirements
- Master’s degree preferred in Curriculum and Instruction, Social Studies/History Education, History, or a related field.
- Minimum of five years of successful experience as a Social Studies/History classroom teacher and a minimum of two years of successful experience as a school- or district-level instructional coach.
- Certified by the State of Tennessee.
- Mets the health and physical requirements of the position.
