Supervisor, Laboratory

University of Pittsburgh Physicians are hiring a full‑time Supervisor, Laboratory to support the MiGEL lab in Oakland, PA. The position works Monday‑Friday during daylight hours and involves completing weekly sequencing for infection prevention, budgeting, ordering supplies and supervising laboratory staff. The MiGEL lab is a genomics lab running the Enhanced Detection System for Healthcare‑Associated Transmission (EDS‑HAT). The ideal candidate will be responsible, organized, and looking to grow with the team.

Responsibilities

• Assess capital needs and ensure adequate funding; develop and manage annual capital and operating budgets.
• Ensure budgets are completed, submitted on time, and provide explanations for variances.
• Participate in quality‑improvement activities, identify issues, drive the QI process, and offer constructive ideas.
• Provide a safe work environment; ensure all staff receive safety, compliance, and other required training.
• Monitor laboratory staff performance, coach, and generate disciplinary action when appropriate; arbitrate disputes and ensure fair treatment.
• Delegate tasks, coordinate efforts, and ensure staff adherence to UPMC policy.
• Promote positive interdisciplinary relations and problem‑solve to ensure quality patient‑care services.
• Participate in committees, specialty work groups, and task forces; provide feedback to patient‑unit directors and other customers.
• Receive, investigate, and act on complaints concerning the laboratory and personnel; discuss issues with the Laboratory Director and supervisors to determine causes and solutions.
• Participate in equipment selection and purchase decisions, ensuring financial feasibility.
• Ensure the laboratory meets regulatory and licensing requirements.
• Develop and implement procedures; provide professional advice on complex tests and problems.
• Adapt methods and equipment to correct problems; establish short‑ and long‑term lab goals.
• Assess laboratory operations and develop plans to improve effectiveness and service.
• Recruit, interview, select, orient, and train personnel; conduct performance evaluations and other HR activities.
• Establish monitoring and control systems, policies, and procedures to achieve strategic goals and maintain compliance with UPMC’s mission of service excellence.
• Create and maintain a customer‑oriented, service‑excellence environment; foster collaborative, collegial relationships.
• Utilize independent judgment and discretion; maintain productive communication networks inside and outside the hospital; act as liaison to other departments and interact with clinicians and nursing staff.
• Perform special projects assigned by the Administrative Director and Laboratory Director.
• Pursue self‑development and stay abreast of developments in management and laboratory science.

Qualifications

• B.S. degree from an accredited college/university and successful completion of a CAHEA‑accredited Medical Technology program, with certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) within 2 years of hire; or a B.S. degree with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science and categorical ASCP certification for the specific specialty; or a B.S. degree with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science; or successful completion of the HEW (HHS) proficiency examination and six years of experience as a Medical Technologist.
• Licensure, certifications, and clearances as required by Act 34.
