About the Role
Oversees the transportation department of one or more locations within an assigned geography, providing leadership within the location(s). Acts as the liaison between customers, operations, customer service representatives (CSRs), and the support team.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and manage inventory supplies to ensure adequate inventories are always available.
- Manage route scheduling to ensure all scheduled customers are serviced by the end of the day. Redirect manpower and resources as needed to address operational difficulties (e.g., vehicle breakdowns, accidents, or full trucks).
- Oversee the driver debrief process for every route, ensuring documentation (manifest, PDT receipt, etc.) for every customer transaction and updating route comments as required.
- Maintain a high standard of customer service as measured by key metrics (on-time service, no missed stops, loyalty, etc.).
- Manage the open order report to resolve service issues.
- Handle the SAP cancellation process for customers terminating contracts before the stated end date.
- Develop customer relationships and establish contacts comfortable providing accurate service feedback.
- Conduct customer visits to review service quality.
- Manage customer interaction records to resolve service issues.
- Monitor operations and staff, recommending changes in methods, procedures, or personnel to optimize resource utilization.
- Track department work productivity, report on trends, and implement improvements to enhance efficiency.
- Review payroll hours to ensure overtime is necessary and employees are working efficiently.
- Manage route vehicles, containers, load bars, straps, hand-trucks, PDTs, printers, and all other company equipment and assets.
- Monitor routes to improve efficiency.
- Select, train, and develop an effective and efficient staff, making every reasonable effort to build a qualified, diverse workforce.
- Establish and communicate performance standards and objectives; conduct performance appraisals.
- Recommend salary adjustments, promotions, transfers, and dismissals.
- Coach employees on educational and job opportunities to enhance career development and keep them informed of company developments through team meetings.
- Perform "ride-alongs" to ensure route drivers operate safely, efficiently, and productively while delivering high customer service.
- Conduct "spot checks" to reinforce proper route driver behavior and communicate the value delivered to customers.
- Perform pre-employment screening, new route driver orientation, reviews of CSRs, and monthly safety meetings.
- Complete daily yard walks.
- Track and input DOT hours/JJ Keller records.
- Administer company policies and procedures, ensuring staff compliance and safety.
- Monitor employee safety and productivity, recommending improvements to prevent accidents or injuries.
- Conduct regularly scheduled safety meetings (e.g., monthly safety, committee, tailgate meetings).
- Oversee and participate in maintaining Driver Qualification Files, DOT Log Files, and Vehicle Condition Reports for all route drivers and equipment. Ensure files are accurate and complete.
- Perform other assigned duties and responsibilities.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 5 years of previous supervisory experience in a structured environment.
- 3 years of transportation/logistics experience, demonstrating the ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
- Valid Driver's License.
Physical Requirements
- Primarily operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and copy machines.
- This role is designated as safety-sensitive, requiring strict compliance with all safety rules and protocols.
- May be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including pre-employment screening, post-incident evaluations, reasonable suspicion checks, and random testing, in accordance with government regulations and company policies.
