About the role

This position provides an opportunity to work in a challenging and exciting work environment, the opportunity to travel, and flexible work hours. Under direction of the Supervising Special Investigator II, the Supervising Special Investigator I (SSI I), provides direct supervision to a team of Northern California Special Investigators in the Sacramento Headquarters Office.

Responsibilities

  • Direct, plan, and organize the work of a team of Special Investigators (Non-Peace Officer) responsible for conducting operational, compliance, and/or performance reviews and investigations of individuals or business entities subject to the California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Act (Act) and the California Code of Regulations Title 14, Division 2, Chapter 5 (Regulations).
  • Travel to various regions of the state and out-of-state, where weather conditions and temperatures can vary.
  • Fieldwork may include driving a motor vehicle and travel via public transportation, including commercial airplane, train, ride-share, and in the same vehicle as other staff.
  • May require up to 50% travel per year.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License and participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Employer Pull Notice Program.

  • Not have peace officer authority, nor perform peace officer responsibilities as defined in the pertinent Penal Code California Section 830 et. Seq.

Requirements

  • Valid California Driver's License (CDL).

Qualifications

Beginning July 1, 2026, CalRecycle staff will be office centered, requiring employees to report to the office at least four days per week. This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program needs. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the positions designated headquarters location, as reflected on the duty statement and at their own expense.
