Provides instruction in an assigned classroom in the absence of the teacher. Creates a class environment that implements the district articulated curriculum, offering positive learning experiences for all students. Establishes positive relationships and rapport with students, parents, and staff members.

Responsibilities

  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Assesses the needs of the students and provides a suitable learning environment to meet their needs.
  • Maintains order in the classroom and ensures a caring, safe learning environment with clear routines and procedures designed to minimize disruption and maximize student on-task time.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Maintains safe and healthful conditions in the classroom and reports promptly any serious accident or illness affecting students.
  • Provides instruction in assigned classroom implementing lesson plans provided by the teacher.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location and the needs and capabilities of individuals or student groups.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes.
  • Supervises students in hallways, at recess or buses as scheduled, and as assigned during extraordinary or emergency situations.
  • Maintains confidentiality, ensuring all students, staff, and parents' right to privacy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with appropriate educational endorsement.
  • Valid Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement per OSPI.
  • Completed employment application and successful background check upon hire.

  • Knowledge in the subject matter for which he/she is expected to teach.
  • Understanding of the legislated, moral, and ethical framework within which they work.
  • Ability to identify and respond to learner differences.
  • Plan for instruction, translating curriculum and outcomes into meaningful learning activities.
  • Create and maintain environments conducive to student learning.
  • Teamwork skills to collaborate with administration, colleagues, support staff, and parent-teacher organizations.
  • Strong organizational skills necessary to plan lessons, manage classrooms, and maintain accurate records.
  • Attention to detail for maintaining up-to-date records.
  • Ability to establish respectful relationships with students and use a broad range of instructional strategies.
  • Create and enhance partnerships with parents.
  • Understand student needs, abilities, and learning styles.

Work Environment

  • Deals with a wide range of staff expertise.
  • Frequent interruptions and need to remain flexible to meet the needs of others.
  • May deal with angry or distraught people.
  • Involves demands from diverse groups, including students, community, and staff.
  • Involves sitting, walking, and standing.
  • Potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students.
  • May require specific positions and movements to demonstrate techniques safely.
  • May teach in a room without telephone communication.
  • Involves attendance at meetings beyond regular business hours periodically.

Pay

  • Daily Sub Rate: $200
  • Half Day Sub Rate: $100
  • Daily Certificated Retiree* Sub Rate: $225
  • Half Day Retiree* Sub Rate: $112.50

*Those eligible have retired through a department of retirement systems or are at least 55 years of age or older with a minimum of 20 verifiable years' teaching experience.

Benefits

Eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours worked during the last two school years (September 1 through August 31). Some on-call positions may not be benefit eligible.
