Substitute Paraeducator - 2026-27 School Year

About the Role

This in-person role fills in for vacancies across 34 school sites, working directly with students to ensure their academic and social success. The position operates on an on-call, substitute basis depending on district needs, with no guaranteed minimum hours or days per week. Work hours, including start and end times, are subject to change.

• PARA I (CLASSROOM/RECESS/GENERAL ED/RESOURCE): Typically outdoors, monitoring students with awareness of safety and equipment use. Supervise and conduct small groups in educational, creative, and structured play activities. Assist with classwork and assignments, tutor students, and monitor activities in the classroom and special events. Monitor student behavior and progress, sharing observations with teachers and professional staff. Typically works 1:1 with an individual student. May assist in classrooms, restroom breaks, lunch periods, and/or recess.
• PARA IA: Typically works collaboratively with students/staff in intensive learning support classrooms, special education classrooms, Pre-K classrooms, or other learning environments. These positions may also serve as a crossing guard.
• PARA IB: Typically works with students/staff in intensive learning support classrooms, special education classrooms, or other K-12 learning environments. Manages challenging student behaviors in a non-escalating, positive manner. Assists teachers in daily management, organization, monitoring, and safety of students. May require feeding, diapering, toileting students with disabilities, and/or monitoring medical conditions. Follows all teachers' guidelines and instructions for room structure.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and conduct small groups in educational, creative, and structured play activities.
• Assist with classwork, assignments, and tutoring.
• Monitor student behavior and progress, sharing observations with teachers and professional staff.
• Work 1:1 with individual students as needed.
• Support students during restroom breaks, lunch periods, and recess.
• Manage challenging student behaviors in a non-escalating, positive manner.
• Assist teachers in daily classroom management, organization, monitoring, and safety of students.
• Provide personal care assistance, including feeding, diapering, and toileting for students with disabilities.
• Monitor medical conditions as required.
• Lift, position, and/or move students, including those with physical impairments (e.g., in/out of vehicles, wheelchairs, pools, or therapy equipment).

Requirements

• Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
• Meet one of the following qualifications:
  • Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university.
  • Completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
  • Received a passing score on one of the PESB-approved assessments.
• Physical ability to:
  • Stand, sit, and walk for extensive periods of time.
  • Use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, or bend frequently.
  • Possess close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds (e.g., books, files, learning resources, equipment) on a regular basis.
  • Lift, position, and/or move students, including those with physical impairments.
  • Withstand physical and emotional stress.
• Exposure to communicable diseases and bloodborne pathogens.
• Ability to interact with groups of students with complex needs and challenging behaviors.

Pay

Hourly rate: $21.15 - $24.75 (depending on assignment type).
