Purpose

Substitutes/Guest Teachers play a critical role each day in the education of our students. Whether replacing teachers, paraprofessionals, clerical staff, or nurses, guest teachers provide for continuity in instruction, supervision, organization, and health of our students.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities

  • Report to main office on time, according to the work-day hours published in the Substitute Teacher Handbook, to check in, review plans or directions and prepare for the lessons/protocols of the day.
  • Familiarize yourself with the building and staff who are available to you throughout the day. Don't hesitate to ask for help.
  • Uphold all District policies, rules, and procedures to which regular staff members are subject.
  • Maintain as fully possible the established routines and procedures (including classroom management techniques) for the school and classroom to which assigned.
  • Teach the lessons outlined in the substitute plans as prepared by the absent teacher. Follow the directions and protocols of the absent staff member.
  • Maximize the probability of success by:
    • clearly communicating behavioral and academic expectations
    • adapting for individual learner needs
    • actively involving students in learning
    • providing a risk-free, safe environment
  • Assume responsibility for overseeing student behavior in class and throughout the building during supervisory periods.
  • Maintain professional standards.
  • Provide direction to students in case of emergency situations.
  • Follow directions given by the absent staff member to conclude your day (process work, tidy room, etc.).
  • Check into the main office during planning periods to assume additional responsibilities if needed.
  • Provide feedback to the absent staff member using the form provided (for teachers). Include comments on the behavior of students, lessons completed, possible changes made in the plans and rationale.
  • Provide feedback to the principal using the form provided.
  • Check out at the main office at the end of your day.
  • If accepting a long-term teaching assignment, you are expected to assume all duties and responsibilities of a full-time teacher (notably: lesson planning, parent communication, report cards, etc. and to be present on all teacher work days including parent-teacher conferences (evenings) and institute days, unless alternative arrangements are made with the building principal.

Physical Demands

  • Elementary And Middle School Positions: While performing the duties of the job, the guest is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk and sit. Occasionally the guest will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person. While performing the duties of the job, the guest may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs such as boxes of books and computer carts. The guest is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, or work output of learners.
  • Music: While performing the duties of the job, the guest is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk and sit. The guest frequently is required to use hands and fingers to feel and reach with hands and arms. The guest must occasionally lift or move up to 25 lbs of musical instruments. The guest is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, or work output of learners.
  • Physical Education Wellness: While performing the duties of the job, the guest is regularly required to stand, talk, hear, walk and sit. The guest frequently is required to use hands and fingers to feel and reach with hands and arms. The guest must occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs such as rearranging furniture or spotting students on equipment. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.
  • Kindergarten: While performing the duties of the job, the guest is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and balance. The guest must occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs such as rearranging furniture or spotting students on equipment. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

Overall Work Environment

  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounter while performing the essential functions of subbing in instructional (teaching and paraprofessional positions.)
  • The noise level in the environment can occasionally be quite loud depending upon the activity in the particular part of the day, content area of the assignment, or location.

Guest Teacher Compensation

  • Daily Guest Teacher - All Positions (Teacher, Paraprofessional, Secretary Rates): Daily Guest Teaching - Full Day: $150/day, Daily Guest Teaching - Half Day: $75/day, NSSD 112 Retiree - Full Day: $160/day, NSSD 112 Retiree - Half Day: $80/day.
  • Long Term Subbing - Certified Position: A guest teacher in a certified position (i.e., teacher, social worker, speech pathologist, etc) scheduled for a long-term assignment in the same position is eligible for the long-term guest teacher rates listed below. Long Term Days Rate: 11 to 29 Days: $175/day (Special per diem rate will begin on the 11th consecutive day and will be applied retroactively to the first ten days of the period.), NSSD 112 Retiree rate is $185; 30+ Days: $275/day (Special per diem rate will begin on the 30th consecutive day and will be applied retroactively to the first twenty-nine days of the period.), NSSD 112 Retiree rate is $285.
