About the role
The position is for a substitute teacher working in various schools within the Detroit Public Schools Community District. The salary range is $22.93 - $25.10 per hour, with increased wages for long-term vacancies or FMLA assignments.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate and assess students' progress on a periodic basis.
- Monitor individual student's progress.
- Receive assignments approved by the Division of Human Resources.
- Select to work in any school five (5) days per week.
- Report to the building Principal or designee at the appointed time per the local school.
- Review with the Principal, Administrator or designee, all plans, schedules and comply with the Student Code of Conduct guidelines during the instructional day.
- Maintain, as fully as possible, the established routines and procedures for the school and classroom to which he/she is assigned.
- Teach the lesson outlined and described and prepared by the absent teacher, Principal or designee.
- Consult with the building Principal, Administrator or designee before initiating any teaching or other procedures.
- Assume responsibility for overseeing pupil behavior in class, maintaining classroom management and control in class, as well as during lunch and recess periods.
- Report, in writing on the form(s) provided by the school secretary, on the day’s activities at the end of each teaching day.
- Follow all District policies, work rules and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictate.
- Take corrective measures to enhance student-learning abilities.
- Instruct students on proper use of equipment, materials, and textbooks.
- Maintain inventory of instructional materials, aids and equipment.
- Maintain accurate complete student records, and prepare reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal/Designee.
Requirements
- Must possess 60 credit hours or higher from an accredited college/university.
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 for day-to-day substitute assignments.
- Must possess 90 credit hours or higher from an accredited college/university to be considered for a long-term substitute assignment.
Qualifications
- Retiree Substitute Teacher (Sub I – Job Classification AR90): Retired teachers who work a minimum of one (1) day per week, up to five (5) days per week.
- Day-to-Day or On-Call Substitute (Sub I – Job Classification 9000): Work "as-needed" in day-to-day assignments, minimum of three (3) days per week.
- Substitute FMLA/LOA (Sub II – Job Classification 9500): Perform duties as the classroom teacher of record, minimum of five (5) days per week.
- Substitute Long-Term/Vacancy (Sub II – Job Classification 9500): Serve in a "VACANCY" assignment, perform duties as the classroom teacher of record, minimum of five (5) days per week.

2025-2026 Rate: $22.93/hr ($183.44 per day) for day-to-day substitute, $25.10 per hour ($200.80 per day) for long-term substitute.
