Job Summary

The Extended School Services (ESS) Program serves students in the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District both before and after school. The District is currently recruiting Substitutes for ESS Rec Attendants and ESS Program Aides. Both positions are approximately 2.0 - 2.5 hours in the morning; generally between the hours of 6:00 am - 8:30 am AND 3.0 - 3.5 hours in the afternoon; generally between the hours of 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm.

Responsibilities

  • Assists students to organize and find appropriate play activities within a positive and encouraging environment.
  • Distributes crafts and/or play material; provides required supplies.
  • Implements school and ESS discipline policy and follows up with appropriate personnel to convey and/or receive information required to perform job functions.
  • Maintains program equipment and work areas; ensures availability of items and/or provides a safe learning and recreational environment.
  • Makes sure individual and/or groups of students are in a variety of settings and provides a safe and positive environment.
  • Organizes quiet or active, age appropriate indoor and/or outdoor activities.
  • Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings and provides a safe and positive environment.
  • Promotes appropriate student behavior and good habits through implementation of a discipline plan to improve the quality of students' outcomes and encourage student development.
  • Responds to inquiries to resolve issues; provides information and/or direction to others.
  • Serves nutritious snacks; ensures students receive proper nutritional items to meet federal and state guidelines.
  • Transfers children directly from/to parents or designee; ensures safety of students and meets the District and program requirements.
  • Assists with the implementation of instructional programs, lesson plans, and enrichment activities.
  • Aids in the planning of learning and/or age appropriate activities; presents and/or reinforces learning concepts.
  • Coordinates and/or oversees individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings; provides a safe and positive learning and recreational environment.
  • Develops and implements craft activities.

Requirements

  • 16 years old;
  • Experience working with children;
  • Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma or equivalent GED and experience working with children;
  • Complete at least 48 units at an institution of higher education OR Obtain an associate’s or higher degree (college level) OR Met (pass) the District administered ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) assessment.

Qualifications

  • Substitute ESS Rec Attendant:
  • Knowledge of: Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of students. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Positive reinforcement techniques. Safe and age appropriate activities. Stages of child development. Basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios. Basic record keeping methods and procedures. Behavior management and motivation techniques. First Aid and CPR. (Or willingness to complete certification through District sponsored program). Health and safety practices and procedures. Operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications. Safety Practices. Written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly.
  • Ability to: Act as a good role model. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships. Gather and/or collate data. Maintain confidentiality. Maintain discipline with students. Operate equipment using defined methods. Work as part of a team Direct positive student discipline using appropriate communication skills. Adapt to changing work priorities; communicate with diverse groups; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Collate data; and use job-related equipment. Schedule a number of activities. Understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Work with a variety of data.
