About the role

HDR is seeking a Substation Project Structural Engineer to join our Power Delivery team. This role involves designing and coordinating structural aspects of high voltage electrical switchyards and substations up to 500kV. The ideal candidate will work closely with Project Managers and project teams to ensure the successful execution of structural engineering tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Execute structural engineering tasks for substation members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.
  • Design and calculate foundation elements like drilled piers, spread footings, and driven piles.
  • Prepare and review specifications for construction and materials.
  • Assign project tasks to EITs and provide technical guidance to non-structural project team members.
  • Perform quality checks and reviews for project deliverables.
  • Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
  • Mentor and train EITs and designers.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently, working with teams in different locations.
  • Participate in project reviews as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Minimum 5 years of technical design experience with high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects.
  • Experience with industry standard design software, including PLS-Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, or MicroStation.
  • Self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.

Preferred/ Desired Qualifications

  • Technical design experience with outdoor design of high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects.
  • Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113, and other industry standards.
  • Experience with AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, and other industry standards.
  • Experience with STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L-Pile, or equivalent software.
