Substation Project Structural Engineer
About the role
HDR is seeking a Substation Project Structural Engineer to join our Power Delivery team. This role involves designing and coordinating structural aspects of high voltage electrical switchyards and substations up to 500kV. You will collaborate with project managers and teams across multiple offices to ensure the successful execution of structural engineering tasks.
Responsibilities
- Execute structural engineering tasks for various substation structural members, including steel shapes, lattice framing, and tubular shapes.
- Design and calculate detailed drawings for substation structures, including steel and foundation elements.
- Prepare and review specifications for construction and materials, and assign tasks to EITs.
- Perform quality checks and reviews for project deliverables, adhering to HDR's Quality Management Systems (QMS).
- Mentor and train EITs, and assist senior engineers in developing best practices.
- Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain industry standards.
- Work independently and manage multiple projects concurrently.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
- Minimum 5 years of technical design experience with high voltage electrical switchyards and substations.
- Experience with industry-standard design software, such as PLS-Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, or MicroStation.
- Knowledge of AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, and other relevant industry standards.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Qualifications
- Technical design experience with high voltage electrical switchyards and substations.
- Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113, and other industry standards.
- Self-starter with strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
Skills
- Proficiency in structural design software.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Pay
The expected compensation range for this position depends on experience and location. The targeted salary range is $90,682 - $145,990.
