About the role

HDR is seeking a Substation Project Structural Engineer to join our Power Delivery team. This role involves designing and coordinating structural aspects of high voltage electrical switchyards and substations up to 500kV. The ideal candidate will have experience with steel structures, foundations, and industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Execute structural engineering tasks for various substation members, including steel shapes, lattice framing, and tubular steel structures.
  • Design and detail for fabrication or development of loading and concept drawings for submittal to steel fabricators.
  • Prepare and review specifications for construction and materials.
  • Assign project tasks to EITs and provide technical guidance to non-structural project team members.
  • Coordinate and perform quality checks and reviews for project deliverables.
  • Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
  • Mentor and train EITs and designers.
  • Work independently and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Participate in project reviews as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Minimum 5 years of technical design experience with high voltage electrical switchyards and substations.
  • Experience with industry standard design software, including PLS-Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, or MicroStation.
  • Self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.

Preferred/ Desired Qualifications

  • Technical design experience with high voltage electrical switchyards and substations of varying complexity.
  • Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113, and other industry standards.
  • Experience with STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L-Pile, or equivalent software.
