Substation Project Structural Engineer
About the role
HDR is seeking a Substation Project Structural Engineer to join our Power Delivery team. This role involves designing and coordinating structural aspects of high voltage electrical switchyards and substations up to 500kV, including steel structures and foundations.
Responsibilities
- Execute structural engineering tasks for various substation structural members, including rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.
- Design detailed calculations and drawings for substation projects, working closely with Project Managers and project teams.
- Prepare and review specifications for construction and materials, assign tasks to EITs, and provide technical guidance to non-structural team members.
- Perform quality checks and reviews of project deliverables, collaborate with other engineers to develop standards, and mentor EITs and designers.
- Collaborate with other engineers to ensure consistent quality across projects and participate in project reviews as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
- Minimum 5 years of technical design experience with high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects, including foundation and steel structural design.
- Experience using industry standard design software, such as PLS-Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, or MicroStation.
- Self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills, and strong problem-solving and collaboration abilities.
Preferred/ Desired Qualifications
- Technical design experience with outdoor design of high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects.
- Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113, and other industry standards.
- Experience with AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, and other industry standards.
- Experience with STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L-Pile, or equivalent software.

Pay
The expected compensation range for this position depends on skills, experience, education, and location. The targeted salary range is $90,682 - $145,990.
