Substation Project Structural Engineer
About the role
HDR is seeking a Substation Project Structural Engineer to join our Power Delivery team. This role involves designing and coordinating structural aspects of high voltage electrical switchyards and substations up to 500kV. The ideal candidate will work closely with project managers and teams across multiple offices to ensure the successful execution of structural engineering tasks.
Responsibilities
- Execute structural engineering tasks for substation structural members, including steel shapes, lattice framing, and tubular steel shapes.
- Design and calculate foundation elements such as drilled piers, spread footings, and driven piles.
- Prepare and review specifications for construction and materials.
- Assign tasks to EITs and provide technical guidance to non-structural team members.
- Perform quality checks and reviews of project deliverables according to HDR's Quality Management Systems (QMS).
- Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain industry standards.
- Mentor and train EITs and designers.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently, working independently and as part of a team.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
- Minimum 5 years of technical design experience with high voltage electrical switchyards and substations, including foundation and steel structural design.
- Experience using industry standard design software such as PLS-Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, or MicroStation.
- Knowledge of AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, and other industry standards.
- Self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
Qualifications
- Technical design experience with high voltage electrical switchyards and substations, including foundation and steel structural design.
- Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113, and other industry standards.
- Experience using industry standard design software, such as STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L-Pile, or equivalent.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Skills
Proficiency in structural engineering software, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively are essential.

Pay
The expected compensation range for this position depends on experience and location, ranging from $90,682 to $145,990 annually.
