About the role
HDR is seeking a Substation Project Structural Engineer to join our Power Delivery team. This role involves designing and coordinating structural aspects of high voltage electrical switchyards and substations up to 500kV, including steel structures and foundations.
Responsibilities
- Execute structural engineering tasks for substation members like rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.
- Design and calculate foundation elements such as drilled piers, spread footings, and driven piles.
- Prepare and review specifications for construction and materials.
- Assign tasks to EITs and provide technical guidance to non-structural team members.
- Perform quality checks and reviews for project deliverables.
- Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
- Mentor and train EITs and designers.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently, working with teams in different locations.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
- Minimum 5 years of technical design experience with high voltage electrical switchyards and substations.
- Experience with industry standard design software, including PLS-Tower, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, or MicroStation.
- Self-starter with strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred/ Desired Qualifications
- Technical design experience with outdoor design of high voltage electrical switchyards and substations.
- Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113, and other industry standards.
- Experience with AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, and other industry standards.
- Knowledge of STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L-Pile, or equivalent software.
