About the role

HDR is seeking a Substation Project Structural Engineer to join our Power Delivery team. This role involves designing and coordinating structural aspects of high voltage electrical switchyards and substations up to 500kV. The ideal candidate will have experience with steel structure and foundation analysis and design, and will work closely with project managers and teams.

Responsibilities

  • Execute structural engineering tasks for substation structural members, including rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.
  • Design and calculate foundation elements such as drilled piers, spread footings, and driven piles.
  • Prepare and review specifications for construction and materials.
  • Assign tasks to EITs and provide technical guidance to non-structural project team members.
  • Conduct quality checks and reviews for project deliverables.
  • Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain standards.
  • Mentor and train EITs and designers.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently, collaborating with teams in different locations.
  • Participate in project reviews as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Minimum 5 years of technical design experience with high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects, including foundation and steel structural design.
  • Experience using industry standard design software, including PLS-Tower and Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD or MicroStation.
  • Self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications

  • Technical design experience with physical/outdoor design of high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects of varying complexity.
  • Familiarity with the latest NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113 and other industry standards.
  • Experience using industry standard design software, including STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L-Pile, or Equivalent.

Pay

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education, and geographical location. The targeted salary range for this position (based on experience and location) is $90,682 - $145,990.
