Substation Journeyman *10K Sign-On Bonus* (Flagstaff)

About the role

Our Flagstaff Substation Maintenance crew has an immediate opening for a Substation Journeyman. This posting has been designated by the Company as a "Hard-to-Fill" position and is eligible for a one-time $10,000 signing/retention bonus under the terms and conditions of the executed LOMA dated 11/11/2025.

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM (AZ/MST). Subject to overtime and/or out-of-town assignments.

Responsibilities

• Perform journeyman-level high-voltage substation maintenance and operations.
• Write and execute switching orders.
• Operate aerial equipment with weight restrictions of 300 lbs or less.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Must qualify as a Substation Journeyman.
• Completed a Registered Apprenticeship Program or an equivalent training program (as approved by APS T&D Technical & Safety Training) plus one year of experience as a Substation Journeyman.
• Commercial Driver’s License (Class “A”) with ability to meet all DOT requirements:
  • Must have at least a Class A CDL permit at the time of application and a clean driving record.
  • If applying with a CDL Permit, a valid Class A CDL license (with no mechanical restrictions, e.g., airbrakes) must be obtained prior to the official transfer/start date.
  • If applying with an out-of-state CDL, a valid Arizona Class A CDL license (with no mechanical restrictions, e.g., airbrakes) must be obtained within 30 days of the official transfer/start date.
• Must live within reasonable distance (one hour) from assigned Headquarters.
• Qualifying tests (written and hands-on) will be administered. Travel reimbursement may be available for out-of-state candidates.
• Must be a U.S. person (U.S. Citizen, U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident, Political Asylee, or Refugee) due to U.S. Export Control Laws.
• For positions at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Stations, must be a U.S. person.
• Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access consistent with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards is required. A full seven-year criminal history will be obtained through the pre-employment background check process (or, for current employees, through supplemental background check process). Additional background checks will be required every seven years to maintain access.

Preferred Qualifications

• Considerable experience performing journeyman-level high-voltage substation duties with an electric utility or other entity operating and maintaining high-voltage substation equipment.
• Basic computer skills such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Self-motivated, able to communicate and work well with others, and possess a positive attitude with the highest commitment to work safety.

• For applicants qualifying based on a registered apprenticeship program: your apprentice number and a copy of your Registered Apprenticeship Program Completion Certificate.
• For applicants qualifying based on experience or equivalent training program: an official letter from HR Management or a member of the company’s operations leadership stating your job title, roles and responsibilities, and length of time in that position.
• Copy of your Class A CDL license (or permit) (front and back, in color).

Registered Apprenticeship Program Criteria:

• Program must have a documented process for hours worked in the field in the work processes associated with the craft (e.g., distribution, transmission, maintenance, etc.). Registered apprenticeship programs for the trades require 7,000–10,000 hours (3–5 years).
• Program must have documented proof of completion of related education classroom courses. Registered apprenticeship programs require a minimum of 144 hours per year of related education courses during the course of the apprenticeship program.
• Journeyman-level experience must be documented in writing if a certificate of completion of Registered Apprenticeship is unavailable. This requires a letter on company letterhead documenting your title, details of your roles and responsibilities, and length of time in that position, signed by an operations or HR manager. This information will be subject to verification.
