About the role

This position is within the P QS Substation & Meter Substation Department of the P Substation & Meter Division at Hawaiian Electric Company. The role is non-exempt and involves constructing, remodeling, and maintaining substations, vaults, and supporting company facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Construct new and remodel existing substations, vaults, and supporting facilities.
  • Install or remove transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, regulators, and similar equipment.
  • Perform general construction work for substations, including carpentry, concrete, and steel work.
  • Install, splice, terminate, maintain, and replace non-leaded cables related to substation work.
  • Inspect, test, service, overhaul, troubleshoot, wire, and repair transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, regulators, and similar equipment.
  • Perform electric and gas welding and cutting as required for construction and maintenance of substations.
  • Work on energized equipment and lines using required protective equipment.
  • Direct work of personnel in lower classifications on any or all of the above operations.
  • Use hand, power, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, drills, and impact guns/wrenches.
  • Drive company vehicles, including trucks carrying personnel and/or materials.
  • Lift and carry materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Perform similar and incidental duties as required.
  • Assume an emergency management role, as assigned, and perform specific functions during emergencies (excluding routine trouble calls/callouts).

Requirements

  • Ability to identify and distinguish between colors, including shades, hues, and tints (required for electrician-related positions).
  • Must pass the Bureau of Motor Carriers physical examination.
  • Must have or qualify for a State of Hawaii commercial driver’s license and meet company driving standards.
  • Must pass a job sample test.
  • Must complete HECO pole climbing class satisfactorily.
  • Must complete on-the-job training (OJT) within 2 years.
  • Must complete the following training within 1 year:
    • Independent Course Study (see Attachment 2).
    • Home Study Module (see Attachment 3).
  • Must pass the Company Written Job Knowledge Test before progressing to the second-to-last step of the pay schedule.

Qualifications

Starting pay and progression depend on the following qualifications:

  • External Licensed Journeyman Electrician: Successful completion of an accredited Commercial/Industrial Electrician Program and a certified State of Hawaii Electrician’s license (start at step 4/D of the pay schedule = $48.96/hour).
  • Completion of HECO Lineman Apprentice program (start at step 5/E of the pay schedule = $50.81/hour).
  • Equivalent training and experience at HECO or another electrical utility (start at step 5/E of the pay schedule = $50.81/hour).
  • Graduate of Substation Electrician Apprentice Program or equivalent training and experience and passing the Company Written Job Knowledge Test (start at step 7/G of the pay schedule = $57.15/hour).

Must successfully complete related training utilizing AVO books for progression to Substation Electrician thereafter.

Pay

  • Substation Electrician 4/D: $48.96/hour
  • Substation Electrician 5/E: $50.81/hour
  • Substation Electrician 7/G: $57.15/hour

Schedule

  • Work Schedule: Monday–Friday
  • Work Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Location: Oahu
