Substation Electrician - Oahu

About the role

This position is within the P QS Substation & Meter Substation Department of the P Substation & Meter Division at Hawaiian Electric Company. The role involves constructing, remodeling, and maintaining substations, vaults, and supporting company facilities.

Responsibilities

• Construct new and remodel existing substations, vaults, and supporting facilities.
• Install or remove transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, regulators, and similar equipment.
• Perform general construction work for substations, including carpentry, concrete, and steel work.
• Install, splice, terminate, maintain, and replace non-leaded cables related to substation work.
• Inspect, test, service, overhaul, troubleshoot, wire, and repair transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, regulators, and similar equipment.
• Perform electric and gas welding and cutting as required for construction and maintenance of substations.
• Work on energized equipment and lines using required protective equipment.
• Direct the work of personnel in lower classifications on any or all of the above operations.
• Use hand, power, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, drills, and impact guns/wrenches.
• Drive company vehicles, including trucks carrying personnel and/or materials.
• Lift and carry materials, tools, and equipment.
• Assume an emergency management role, as assigned, performing specific functions during emergencies (excluding routine trouble calls/callouts).
• Perform similar and incidental duties as required.

Requirements

• Ability to identify and distinguish the difference between colors, including shades, hues, and tints.
• Must pass a Bureau of Motor Carriers physical examination.
• Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii commercial driver’s license.
• Must meet the standards for driving positions as stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy.
• Must pass a job sample test.
• Must satisfactorily complete HECO pole climbing class.
• Must satisfactorily complete on-the-job training (OJT) within 2 years.
• Must complete Independent Course Study within 1 year (see Attachment 2).
• Must complete Home Study Module within 1 year (see Attachment 3).
• Must pass the Company Written Job Knowledge Test before progressing to the second-to-last step of the pay schedule.
• Must successfully complete related training utilizing AVO books for progression to Substation Electrician, Thereafter.

Qualifications

Applicants who meet the following requirements will start at the indicated steps of the pay schedule and progress accordingly:

• External Licensed Journeyman Electrician: Successful completion of an accredited Commercial/Industrial Electrician Program and a certified State of Hawaii Electrician’s license (start at step 4/D = $48.96).
• Completion of HECO Lineman Apprentice program (start at step 5/E = $50.81).
• Equivalent training and experience at HECO or other Electrical Utility (start at step 5/E = $50.81).
• Graduate of Substation Electrician Apprentice Program or equivalent training and experience and must pass Company Written Job Knowledge Test (start at step 7/G = $57.15).

Pay

• Substation Electrician 4/D: $48.96 per hour
• Substation Electrician 5/E: $50.81 per hour
• Substation Electrician 7/G: $57.15 per hour

Schedule

• Work Schedule: Monday–Friday
• Work Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
• Location: Honolulu – Oahu
