About the Role
Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) is seeking a Substation Electrician to support our manufacturing areas in and around Berkeley and Hazelwood, MO. This is a skilled, journey-level position performing installation, maintenance, and repair of substations, including low, medium, and high-voltage work such as switching, equipment maintenance, and calibration. The role involves electrical construction, troubleshooting of electric utility facilities, and training apprentices or other employees as assigned. Positions are generally filled by advancement from an Apprentice Electrical Substation class.
Responsibilities
- Install, test, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair protective relays, regulator control and operating devices, power transformer protective and safety devices, and maintain appropriate records.
- Install, test, maintain, and repair 4160V, 12kV, and 34kV power circuit breakers; perform periodic trip testing.
- Maintain, test, and repair 115V, 4kV, 12kV, and 34kV power transformers and ATS systems.
- Sample, test, and evaluate insulating oil and other media; maintain records including DGA and dielectric tests.
- Troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and calibrate computer-based SCADA systems, transducers, input devices, communication equipment, and data transmission equipment.
- Perform substation high-voltage switching operations.
- Test, calibrate, maintain, and repair distribution system line equipment such as transformers, capacitors, regulators, ATS systems, high-speed ground systems, and associated control equipment.
- Test prior to energizing and perform fault locating of high-voltage underground cable systems.
- Assist with the design, programming, installation, and maintenance of PLC functions.
- Install, maintain, and repair electric control/protection systems, including AC and PLC systems.
- Perform infrared scanning of substations and transmission/distribution equipment.
- Read, interpret, and update electrical drawings, plans, diagrams, and specifications; sketch electrical drawings to reflect as-built systems.
- Participate in policy and standards development as required.
- Work closely with engineering teams on maintenance and CIP projects.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
- Completion of an accredited Trade School or apprenticeship program.
- Experience with solid-state circuitry and computer-based test equipment, control, monitoring, and analysis systems.
- Knowledge of electrical theory, control relaying, protection relaying, control and power switching schemes.
- Knowledge of power distribution substations and SCADA systems.
- Understanding of electrical codes including NFPA 70E, OSHA Regulations, and other applicable codes.
- Ability to use bench test equipment such as TTR (Transformer Turns Ratio), Megger, AC/DC Hipot, multimeters, and analyzers.
- Safe work practices and procedures, including high-voltage switching procedures.
- Ability to troubleshoot and analyze communication systems; strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to read electrical and communication distribution maps.
- Ability to keep accurate records using computer software.
- U.S. Citizenship is required to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance; an interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance post-start is required.
Working Conditions
- 100% onsite work at one of the listed locations (Berkeley or Hazelwood, MO).
- Travel between sites; exposure to high voltage and heights.
- Lifting, climbing, and stooping; working in small, confined areas.
- Hazardous conditions, including proximity to energized lines and equipment up to 34,500 volts.
- Ability to lift electrical components or fixtures weighing up to 70 pounds.
- Extended periods of sitting, standing, or moving about; communication via telephone or radio.

Pay
Summary pay range: $20.41/hourly - $44.64/hourly USD, based on candidate experience, qualifications, market, and business considerations.
Schedule
The selected candidate must be able to work any shift, as assigned. This is an hourly position governed by the IBEW Collective Bargaining agreement.
