About the Role
The Monitor Minibus assists the minibus driver to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of students, particularly those requiring special education services.
Responsibilities
- Assist students requiring help to load or unload the bus.
- Actively assist the driver when backing the bus.
- Monitor students' well-being and behavior during the route.
- Respond appropriately to students' needs and notify the driver of emergencies.
- Be familiar with the route to assist substitute or new drivers.
- Assist the driver in keeping the bus clean.
- Safely secure all wheelchair students and student equipment (e.g., wheelchairs, seat belts, car seats, trays) using restraints and tie-downs.
- Sit where needed on the bus, avoiding the area behind the driver unless the bus is empty.
- Complete a walk-through to ensure no student or book bag is left on the bus.
- Assist with emergency evacuation drills to ensure compliance with mandated procedures.
- Ensure students remain seated and do not undo seat belts while the bus is moving.
- Prevent and intervene in student conflicts, verbal abuse, self-abuse, or disruptive behavior that threatens safety.
- Report observations or incidents (e.g., discipline, accidents, inappropriate behavior) to the transportation supervisor.
- Lead or attend staff meetings/trainings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Maintain responsibility for district-owned assets and ensure their appropriate use.
- Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all district, state, and federal policies, including the Employee Conduct Policy and Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Board of Education, superintendent, or district administration.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- CDL required within 6 months of hire date.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to talk or hear.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, reach, crouch, or crawl.
- Must regularly lift and move up to 35 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision.
Work Environment
- Work environment is not a standard office setting; includes the entire active school campus, both inside and outside facilities.
- Noise level is usually low to moderate and occasionally high.
