Student - Library Circulation Desk

This position begins as soon as agreed upon for the semester and ends on a determined basis, and requires federal work study funding. Learn more about the Federal Work Study Program.

Responsibilities

• Check out and discharge books for library patrons at the Circulation Desk.
• Assist patrons with locating resources within the library and online.
• Help patrons with basic printing and directional questions.
• Provide basic to intermediate research help via chat and in person, including:
  • Searching for known titles of books.
  • Conducting exploratory searches for material on a given subject.
• Become familiar with physical and electronic resources available through the library website, including databases, library guides, and more.
• Refer users with in-depth questions to the appropriate subject librarian.
• Become familiar with the library's FAQ.

Training for chat monitoring and research help will be two days for about two hours each day. The first day covers the library website, and the second day covers research methods. A detailed online guide with examples will be provided.

Requirements

• Federal work study funding is required.
• Submit a cover letter with:
  • Information about work-study funding for the starting semester.
  • Details about your experience using library resources (databases, articles, books, online guides, etc.).
• Submit a screenshot of your class schedule from classschedule.tulane.edu.
• Submit a screenshot of your work-study acceptance and amount from Gibson.

Qualifications

• Previous library work experience is not required.
• Knowledge of scholarly research techniques using books, articles, and databases is preferred.
• Outgoing personality with a passion for public interactions and showcasing library resources.

This position is ideal for students interested in library science; several previous student workers have become professional librarians.
